Dec 21 09 12:12 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I was hoping for a DEATH RACE 2000 when I went to see THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS, but it's more like a country-folk vs townies battle of two cultures. A town that lives off car crash victims (like the wreckers that lived off salvage by misguiding ships into the rocks). It's more of a 'comment' film, on technology and the reliance on cars, than a horror movie - a shame considering the fantastic image of the spiky Volkswagen. PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK is superb - but part of the film's power worked on me initially because I thought it was based 'on a true story', which it turns out was just a come-on. The atmosphere, the pace, the music are all quite mystical - great for a midnight movie if you like slow-paced suspense. Black Hole DVD Reviews

Own the Criterion of Weir's The Last Wave but haven't gotten around to watching as of yet. Peter Weir is an interesting, masterful director and I am looking forward to seeing his next The Way Back. Picnic at Hanging Rock, probably Weir's masterpiece, is as if Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch co-directed an episode of Masterpiece Theater, really, but its in many ways even more impressive. Stay away from THE CARS THAT ATE PEOPLE. It is an abomination. I went in expecting something like Peter Jackson's first film and I was pleasantly surprised.

I grabbed it up without blinking. Ditto HERE WE GO ROUND THE MULBERRY BUSH, one of my favorite UK '60s films. That one comes in BD and SD.

I'm really psyched to re-visit this film and see the original theatrical cut for the first time. Also watched the lengthy documentary A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM and found it beyond fascinating. Plenty more extras for me to check out on this superb 3-DVD Region 2 set of PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK. They do discuss the music in the documentary, but yeah, no isolated music score. You do, however, hear a lot of the music during the extras, including a long stretch of it during the 'Before/After' segment. Also, no commentaries, though you won't miss them once you watch the exhaustive documentary (I didn't, anyway. Would have seemed redundant). It really creates its own world, its own sense of place... just a perfect film from every conceivable angle. I am glad the mystery remained unresolved. I read a description of the original novelist's resolution in a postscript and I am glad it was not filmed. H.
