Basically, some college students from the late 60s who bought and used a drug called Blue Sunshine start losing their hair and turn into psychotic killers 10 years later. One guy (who keeps getting accused of the killings) tries to nail the pusher, who is running for political office. It's on Hulu, if you care. I know a few people around here have seen it, because it pops up among the movies listed on one of those tracking threads. Oct 29 09 2:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I like it, but it's one of those premises where the twist usually gets spilled in the description (it is Blue Sunshine that is obviously causing the crime), because it's the "twist" that keeps the film interesting.

Oct 30 09 12:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Accepting what you're saying is probably right, Monster, isn't that the case with about 95 percent of all horror movies? I mean, c'mon. Let's not kid ourselves here. This is, without question, the most escapist of all movie genres. We throw ourselves into impossible to rationalize situations and go from there. All I ask of a horror/sci-fi movie is that there is an honest effort by the characters. I thought we got that with Blue Sunshine. It may not have been the greatest acting in the history of cinema, but I don't think anybody mailed it in. Well, maybe that "Big No. 32" guy. But I think he was dumbed down on purpose. Oct 30 09 3:17 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A few years ago I was doing research on those "educational" LSD scare films from the late 60s & early 70s, and I thought that BLUE SUNSHINE was a great expression of the anxiety that comes from watching too many bogus anti-drug film warnings about the dangers of acid "flashbacks" and alleged DNA damage.

Nov 5 09 1:54 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A couple years back during a Deep Discount sale I got the "limited edition" widescreen two-disc set which includes a cd of the soundtrack. I've not got around to listening to the cd, but I get a kick out of the movie which works as a horror thriller with a hint of "it could happen." And while Zalman King did not evolve into a great actor or filmmaker, his desperate hero performance and that of the mostly unknown cast added to the fun. And there's Mark Goddard of LOST IN SPACE mini-fame playing a sleazy politician. While not a feel-good film, BLUE SUNSHINE was at least a few notches above so much of the downbeat stuff that came out of the seventies.

Gil Remember how it was a staple plot gimmick of TV dramas for awhile back in the day, Gil? Some guy would give up the hippy life style and go straight, only to find himself the victim of hokey flashbacks at the most dangerous moments the writers could come up with. And of course, the return of Dragnet in the late sixties made it Jack Webb's business to root out every flashbacker in the greater LA area. Because it was his city. He was a cop. He carried a badge. 714, to be precise. Dom-da-dom-dom . . .

The fun thing is, the overseers and the deadpan narrator do not go into the insight the troops undoubtedly had at the time: "Why are we walking around in the woods pretending we're fighting someone, when there is no reason to do that, it's giggle-funny to even consider it, and there's fuzzy critters up in this tree who want to say hi?" Anybody have a line on any Army training films with B-Z , "Bravo-Zulu," the incapacitating gas? THAT must've been sumthin'... Still waiting on my flashbacks, too. Darn.

Haven't seen it since way back when, but I do recall several scenes of "super-human strength" like the truck scene. This movie came out on the heels of the big PCP / angel dust scare of the mid-70's when there were news stories each night of people taking PCP and having "super-human strength" and fighting off 20 police officers before getting arrested. Hollywood seemed to have a drug fetish every few years starting with THE TINGLER (1959) and the Vincent Price LSD scene. When Dragnet came back in 1967, the very first episode was THE BIG LSD. (the so-called Blue Boy episode pictured above). THE OUTER LIMITS even got on the band wagon with the EXPANDING HUMAN episode and the "consciousness expanding drug" along with several "super-human strength" scenes. I seem to recall just about every show of the late 60's early 70's had a "drug episode". Didn't ROOM 222 have a drug episode also?

I love all those 60s anit-drug educational films, I have a bunch of them from Something Weird, and a few 16mm prints I've collected myself. LSD: Trip or Trap? by Sid Davis (one-time John Wayne stunt double and often regarded as the Ed Wood of Classroom Scare films) is one of my faves from that genre. I'm alos a huge fan of Lieberman's previous film, Squirm (1976), which I remember sneaking off into the city as a kid and seeing on a double bill with Gert I Gordon's Food of the Gods. There is a funny scene where the big fellow goes all Blue Sunshine at a disco, and the disco music helps triggers his homicidal rage. The soundtrack for this film is nice and eerie in a 70s kind of way. As someone who used to drop acid in high school and college, I think the stuff about "flashbacks" is an urban legend. I'll have to look it up on Snopes.
