I finally got around to buying the DVD of this movie and was not surprised to find that I STILL enjoyed the darn thing. It's slow, yes... but I like the overall concept. It's different from most other films of this time and genre. OK, I'll admit it might have been better if God HAD appeared and he'd been created by the same Mexican firm responsible for The Giant Claw... but you can't have EVERYTHING! Noticed some things: - Herbert Berghof out-acted everybody else put together and I was rootin' for his character. - Good to see Willis 'As long as Ike's president I have a job' Bouchey playing, er, the president. - What the hell was Peter Graves made up to be? - I liked that the picture took place in the near future. Based on one comment, 1956. - If those photos of the Martian icecap being used for irrigation proved the existence of a civilization of Mars, who the hell did Peter Graves think he was talking to? Or wasn't he gonna tell anybody? - noticed that it was a good ol' American Christian God. To my friends of the Hebrew and Mohammedan persuasion, oh well. - what a terrific little time capsule of early '50s home-grown paranoia.

Apr 20 12 4:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have a good bootleg of the movie, and still wouldnt mind upgrading, but not to a Cheezy Flix boot. I know they sell on Amazon, but I'm surprised they also sell via Barnes and Noble and Walmart (see this: http://www.dvdcult.com/cheezyflicks.htm). I must be one of the few to like this movie. I love how the dictatorial East and capitalist West both collapse when it turns out God exists. Also the noirish setting of the Nazi and his transmitter, the Cold War visuals behind the Iron Curtain, the parents' martyrdom which reminds me of the Rosenbergs. I dont see any paranoia in the movie - just the opposite. The only thing that seems odd is Peter Graves' built-in wall TV above the fireplace (even if it's a futuristic flatscreen, seems like an odd place for it). The plot superficially reminds me of Heinlein's famous "Stranger in a Strange Land" which I couldnt finish, or should say, Grok.

Then God intervened,to keep him from undoing what had happened. Besides a few histrionics from the wife,I was thourougly entertained,although it did start off slow.

Apr 21 12 10:07 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Looking in my ancient records, I see that I first viewed RED PLANET MARS exactly 49 years ago yesterday. All I knew of the movie at the time was the title, which was certainly enticing, and the TV Guide designation of "Science Fiction". I imagine there was a brief blurb about the plot in the magazine, but I don't remember what it was. Anyway...while I didn't expect a classic (by that time I assumed that if something was worth knowing in the genre, I'd know it), I did expect some good ol' '50s sci-fi fun. So, it's safe to say I most certainly did not enjoy this one. Between the lack of little green men or big red planets and the heavy-handed religiosity, I was totally bummed. Still am, actually. I tend to hold a grudge.

At least Darren McGavin and Nick Adams go to Mars, even if they do ride there on mostly stock footage, and there are some alien monsters to add to the fun.
