I was just wondering if anyone out there had identified which "side" was used for any individual DVD releases. Seems like we've nitpicked smaller details!

Like I said, the deciding factor could be how the film was shot. The Universal 3-D rig was a parallel rig like so: Meaning emulsion would be towards the screen when printed, rather than the normal emulsion away from screen. Some of the camera rigs were in an "L" configuration like such: And therefore, the left eye is the primary negative used for various "flat" prints because its orientation is "normal" rather than flipped. I always wondered about the meteorite crater ... it's 1000 yards across. I'd guess that's like a 340-yard diameter. What I know about meteorites, you could fit in your eye, but still I think the impact would have woken up the town a couple miles away. However, except for a couple people, it doesn't. SOMEthing hitting Earth hard enough to create a crater that big .... isn't that the kind of impact that, like, destroys everything for miles around, maybe even does things to the planet that changes the whole shebang? And yet in ICFOS, it doesn't even wake people up. In fact, except for a crater rim, it doesn't even change the terrain a few yards away!

When we get a backseat view of them (past the front-seat people in a car and a truck), they fill up the entire windshield even though they're still a ways down the road, which makes them look like they're the size of a bus. But later there's one in the mine shaft which looks to have an eight-foot ceiling; and one even shares the front seat of Ellen's convertible with her. I'm sure it was just inattention to detail that created these discrepancies but maybe, since it's such a plot point that they CAN morph, they DO morph size-wise -- from truck-size when they want to stop a moving vehicle, to human-size when they materialize inside a car. Just food for thought, for those with un-picky appetites!

(07/04/09 1:27 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Except for the bit with Joe Sawyer getting into Barbara Rush's car then going all Xenomorph on her, it didn't seem to me that the size of the aliens varied much, although they did get much closer to the camera at some times than at others. Though there are those Life photos--it's interesting they even exist; must have been taken before U-I decided never to show the critters in print--with very clear images of the Xenomorph in the movie, in the course of the story, it does have attributes not entirely explained, or visible, in those photos. Like those big jelly-like extrusions (?) that seem to wrap around the miners.

(07/04/09 2:47 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	The only other board I visit as often as this one (well, almost as often) is devoted to the Kingston Trio. Usually there's no connection between this board and that one, and even when there is, it's kind of tenuous. Like this one. Every week, singer-musician Jim Moran posts an article on a song the Kingston Trio did, with links to a video of the song--plus the song as done by several other singers. This week's song was "Get Along, Little Dogies" (aka "Dogies' Lament"), kind of an odd song for the Trio to do, but they did do it, and quite well. However, the first video Jim posted (almost all of them are from YouTube) was Roy Rogers singing this song in "The Border Legion" (1940); he sings while playing cards, and everyone around him joins in the familiar chorus. ("Whoopie ti yi yo...") I usually shut it off as soon as the end credits role, but watched it until the end this time and noticed something I had not before. Kathleen Hughes received a top billing credit with her photo at the end despite only having one tiny scene that really amounts to nothing. I also noticed her image has a prominent placement on the poster front and center as well as her name displayed on the poster as if she had a major role in the movie. Anyone know why she ranked so high despite barely appearing in the film?

She had a feeling the pic was going to be big box office-wise and practically begged for a part in it, no matter how minor. So Universal let her be in a 3-D test and gave her the one little scene.

CEASE FIRE << At the library the other day, I stumbled across a CEASE FIRE tidbit that got my attention: It was shot in Korea, with real soldiers, and one was coming across really well -- but he wanted to stop playing around with this movie and get back into battle, and had them write a death scene for him so that he could do it and get back to work. So the moviemakers did, and he went back to war, and four days later he was killed. So he was killed in Korea in reel and real life, four days apart.

If it's 1000 yards across, the diameter is 1000 yards. If it's 1000 yards around, the diameter is 318 yards. For reference, the Trinity test left a 367 yard diameter crater, and that was a 20 kilo-ton detonation. It rattled windows 100 miles away.
