Craig--I expressly asked you NOT to mention the William S. Hart film!

The above exchange is probably flying over the heads of most casual readers.
Of interest to (possibly) only Bob and Craig: Couple of years ago I joined a group called SASS (Single Action Shooting Society), a 90 thousand person club where you dress up cowboy and shoot single action guns, for fun (membership also provides great hotel discounts). A small element of the club is role play (the dress-up part) and when you join, you have to pick an "alias". You can make a name up, and pick one that fits the category that you shoot in at matches. I picked "Hoot Mix". Some of the old-timers get it. A couple of the more hip shooters get that Hoot Mix was a character that popped up in an adventure of Rocky and Bullwinkle. William S. Hart wants you to join the US Army. I'll ask Ron Chaney this weekend who he'd like to see play Lon, in our fantasy biopic. Mark Redfield

Never heard of SASS before, but it sounds great! Only used a single action once or twice, on a firing range. (Carried a double action professionally, for a
few years.) A number of friends and family (and girlfriends) raise/raised horses, so trips to the local saddle and rodeo shops were pretty common. (Dad used
to enter local rodeo events when he was in his teens, and a friend of mine and her horse will be participating in one this weekend.) I still drop by those
places from time to time. Most of them also have gift shops with western-themed merchandise, and I always smile when I see a display of classic cowboy films
among the goodies. (Talking vintage titles from the Thirties and Forties.) Occasionally a few books on Hollywood westerns show up there, as well.
Seems like there might be a Tom Mix title or two from Castle Films on 8mm sittin' around here, waitin' to be loaded into the projector again. (Such as THE COWBOY AND THE KING, the Castle digest of 1932's MY PAL, THE KING.) "Cactus Bob"

Mark & Bob, I learned to load & fire a muzzle-loader musket the summer I did TECUMSEH! - does that count?

This is a great group where folks dress up in period clothes and shoot single action pistols, Winchester repeater rifles and shotguns.
My ailas is Monument Valley Mike, because of my love for Ford films shot in that beautiful Valley. I always thought Darren McGavin would have made a great Chaney. Recently told Tony Hopkins I thought he'd be great as Chaney and he was quite pleased at the suggestion. |

I learned to load & fire a muzzle-loader musket the summer I did TECUMSEH!I think that qualifies you for "Multi-Action Firing!" Not yet had the chance to watch a performance of TECUMSEH, but did see a great outdoor production of BLUE JACKET that was amazing. I always thought Darren McGavin would have made a great Chaney.Would have never thought of that but you're right, Michael! (Or should that be Mr. Blake? ) Like the Monument Valley moniker.

BLUE JACKET is TECUMSEH!'s sister show, Bob.
TEC is a real spectacle, with a big cast, little lake, horses, cannons - and a decent script. I think you'd like it, and Sugarloaf Mountain Ampitheatre is great. (Probably closest I'll ever get to being in an epic film!) -Craig (aka, "Lt. Ross," who led the final big charge against the Indian Nation - I always said his middle names were "Douglas Fairbanks".) |

Michael--small world. If there was a "secret sign", I'd give it! My experience with SASS has been to discover some of the warmest and most
giving groups I've ever interacted with--almost like Monster Kids! The test of good-natured friendship was during the Obama/McCain race.
During the election there was a big northeast regional match, and every morning after leaving the hotel, I'd stop at a 7-11 for morning coffee. Let it be known I would pick an "Obama cup". From the 7-11 to the range, passing farm after farm, was a forest of McCain posters. Not one to let even a bad cup of coffee go to waste, I though briefly about leaving it in the truck. Then I thought, "screw it", pulled the brim of my hat down with Gary Cooper-like resolve, and went about the morning. Not a peep all weekend. No politics. Just cowboys. Good thing I'm a good shot, too. Mark Redfield

The BLUE JACKET production that I saw was a long-runnng show done at an outdoor ampitheatre in Xenia, Ohio. (One memorable touch was the use of hillsides that swiveled out to become fort walls.) It's been announced a new outdoor frontier show will be launched there this year, but I've not heard a title yet. |

...and TEC has the added fillup of actually being staged in the old Shawnee "capital," Chalahgawtha, Ohio.

Facts vs. Fiction | ||

After reading that interview, it would be nice if Ron could tell reality from myth.
The whole story of the disfigured guys following Chaney is so full of crap. It comes from a fan magazine article circa 1925-26 and has absolutley NO BASIS IN FACT. Geez. As for Jim Carrey, I know his makeup artist has told me Carrey would like to play Chaney, but the chances of a Chaney bio pic is unlikely, given the way the studios are runned today. I have always said the best way to rpesent Chaney and his work is via a documentary. No matter how good an actor could play Chaney, it ISN'T Chaney. Big difference. |

The best way to represent Chaney is to make his films more accesible. It's beyond me why so many of them haven't recieved a proper DVD release

The best way to represent Chaney is to make his films more accesible. It's beyond me why so many of them haven't recieved a proper DVD release Out of the 50 or so Chaney films that exist, about 15 of them are fragments or incomplete (and four of those incomplete or fragments have been put out on video), 21 of them have been released. I'd hardly call him misrepresented (considering the saleability of many of the titles).

One other mistake.... | ||

Ron Chaney made in that article.....
All of Chaney's films ARE NOT in public domain. How he can say that is truly ludicrous. ALL the MGM films (1924-30) are under copyright. Geez. |

I came very close to joining SASS - to the point of calling about an alias. I wanted Drake Robey, the vampire gunslinger from Curse of the Undead. I figured
NOBODY would have requested it. Wrongo! Someone already snagged it.

(Or discussion of putting out a DVD with both versions of THE UNHOLY THREE?) I wanted Drake Robey, the vampire gunslinger from Curse of the Undead.Looks like you're gonna have to go with something from VALLEY OF GWANGI, amigo. (You know, I think I'd try for "One-Shot Beaudine," just to see if anyone gets it. If that's already taken, maybe go with a variant like "Single-Shot Beaudine.")
