Just heard on the radio that the veteran actor passed away at his Brentwood home at the age of 97. What a long life.! There was an earnestness about Malden
that I always found appealing even in his earliest film turns as a cop in BOOMERANG! and WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS. After STREETCAR and the Oscar, Malden was
branded as a distinguished character actor that was reinforced by ON THE WATERFRONT. He said in an interview if it wasn't for the Quinn Martin series, THE
STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO and the American Express commericials, he wouldn't have had enough to live on.

I just heard about it. Bummer. A really good actor. I remember him well as Gen.Omar Bradley in PATTON. And who here could forget him as the NASA expert in
METEOR. Rest well Mladen Sekulovich.

people think that character actors make a living wage, but in many cases if they dont get at least a good supporting role on a TV Series there not really all
that much money.
Karl Malden was such a good actor, and thankfully he percevered and was able to gain fame later in his life! Rip Mr Malden |

To borrow Malden's great line from POLLYANNA: "Death Comes Unexpectedly!"
Uh-oh, I can hear Weaver gearing up to say "Too soon!" so I'll add, at 97, not TOO unexpectedly. Read Video WatchBlog at www.videowatchdog.com!

Too soon!
A year or two ago, I wrote and asked him if I could interview him about PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE. A few weeks passed, I got a letter from him, I opened it, and all that was inside was a wallet-sized autographed photo ..... of some guy I didn't recognize! I said to myself, "Oooookay, never mind the interview" -- but then I saw him in a new documentary about the career of Norman Lloyd, and he was perfectly lucid. Oh well. I guess somebody who was expecting Malden to send a wallet-sized photo of "Joe Hasdfgsdfdsadf" instead got a nice letter full of PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE memories! R.I.P. |

Streets of San Francisco was a "must see TV" back in the day.

I never missed an episode of that show. Mr Malden's death comes as
a real shock to me for I thought he'd been dead for years! |

Such variety of roles. Two fine western villains come to mind; in ONE-EYED JACKS and NEVADA SMITH. And a fine film he directed, TIME LIMIT, recently on TCM
and DVD, with great work from Richard Basehart and Rip Torn.

Karl Malden. Now there's a guy who never gave a bad performance. At least I've never seen one.

Or one word: Patton.
I think he had the best line out of that entire movie: pinned down by Axis gunfire, an underling (who doesn't know that Malden's character is in charge of the unit) asks him, "Who the hell is running this outfit?!" To which Malden answers: "I dunno... but they ought to hang him!"
"[The audiance] will populate the darkness with more horrors than all the horror writers in Hollywood could think of. If you make the screen dark enough,
the mind's eye will read anything into it you want! We're great ones for the dark patches." -VAL LEWTON

The guy was always solid. DAMN solid. ( Michael Douglas once said that Karl Malden taught him what acting was really about- I wonder what Kirk thought about
that comment! )

I love the image of him sitting in that old car shouting "BAAA-by Doll!" like an idiot, and then grinning sheepishly as the two old black guys laugh
at him.
But there are so many great film images from his career. Glad he lived such a long, full life but I'm sorry that he won't be around anymore.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

Having kind of a one-track movie mind, usually when one of these cool character actors pass on, my mind flashes inevitably to their genre credits ... but not
with Malden. I'd forgotten all about PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE. Like others have said, he's good in everything, but I think he's aces in BABY
DOLL, just complex and pathetic and tremendous, it's a performance for the ages, and a great starring role for him.
