     A friend and I watched Tron in 70mm at Lincoln Center (the Walter Reade Theater) on Sunday. I'd seen it before, but never theatrically. I agree with some of the comments expressed here (particularly reddog122's) - the script isn't very good, and the characters are forgettable, though Jeff Bridges, not surprisingly, lights up the screen, pun intended, and does more than enough with what he's given.

     However, the primitive and colorful, abstract look of the early computer graphics played out better in a theatrical screening than on the DVD I'd previously seen. The colors particularly popped out and the lightcycle sequence was truly exciting to watch (unfortunately, I thought the movie deflated, plot-wise, quickly after that). There are also a couple of nifty nightlife shots of neon signs and bright city lights, in the early real world scenes, that subtly foreshadow the look of the computer world that is revealed later on. And Wendy Carlos' score sounded fantastic on the Walter Reade's sound system.

    One thing I noticed is that, in the computer-world scenes, the camera almost never moves (by contrast, there was a well-done crane shot in one of the real-world scenes, when the three computer programmers are breaking into the Encom offices, if I remember correctly). I guess this was due to the early computer graphic animation.

    I still don't consider it a great film; regarding movies about real life vs. computers, I think Wargames is a much better film on that subject for the year 1982. But I did come to appreciate the art design, color and music much more seeing it in 70mm.
