Jan 2 09 9:52 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I liked In the Mouth of Madness as well. Wasn't that a Stephen King idea? I have no patience with King's plastic writing, but every once in a while he has an idea that can be turned into a good film, and In the Mouth of Madness is a good story well-told by Carpenter. I'm told Carpenter sits around at home a lot and just smokes weed all day long. If that's true -- and I'm not saying it's true -- it accounts for some of the things you guys are complaining about. Or his lack of inspiration could be as simple as needing a fresh field to plow. Personally, I think Carpenter should be making westerns. Perhaps darker westerns than we've seen come from the genre thus far. He has the temperament and orientation for westerns. He admits to watching a lot of them. Westerns would put him in a different frame of mind and he would contribute something new and different to the genre. He should decide on the story and then let somebody else write the script. Carpenter is known as a horror director but he was born to make westerns. If any of you reading has access to Carpenter give him a kick in the ass from Richard and tell him what I said. I feel the same way about Dario Argento, except I think Argento should be making dark and dangerous spaghetti westerns. Is it the fresh air, bight sunshine, and pretty scenery associated with this outdoor genre? Would you like westerns better if they were more like horror movies? Surely what you describe is a horror film that happens to have a western setting, tho. I guess it's been done, tho I can't think of one offhand. The Quick and the Dead? That was all right. I don't particularly want to see it again, however.

More to the point, Carpenter intended Assault On Precinct 13 to be a modern remake of Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo. It's much tighter than the original. I love Rio Bravo but let's face it, the film talks too much and moves too little. The "siege" remains a solid premise for any genre, from westerns like The Stalking Moon to horror to sci-fi like Aliens. It's possible to make a legitimate western that is simultaneously a legitimate horror story, but that's a different discussion for another thread. The Fiend Who Walked the West (Fox, 1958) Future producer Robert Evans in a western horror remake of the noir Kiss of Death (1947) with Gothic trappings The Undead (Universal International, 1959) English character actor Michael Pate, who often played Indians in westerns, as a vampire gunslinger. Jan 7 09 11:19 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, I love the Wurdelak. I don't really see it as a western tho: no wild west setting, no gun fights and def no injuns. These are the things -- the conventions of the 'western', I guess -- that generally bore me to tears. John Wayne and all that. Don't mind some of those Clint spag westerns, but they're not something I actively seek out. It's just that unshaven blokes shooting at each other from behind big cacti isn't all that compelling. A film that isn't quite that but has a few similar trappings might be a very different beast.

May 26 09 6:10 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I had a script idead that went unfinished that involved Jack the Ripper coming to america and resuming his killings in the west. It also had a supernatural angle involving shamanism from africa resuming indian style. I think the ideas was influenced by Cammels' The White of the Eye. Oh well. I'll bet Carpenter would have finished it.
