Having overdosed on watching the old Steve Reeves film on Million Dollar Movie (WOR Channel 9 NY) growing up I was delighted to discover the film, fully
restored WS from DVDY-France. One aspect of the transter was the use of the American dub track for the final reel (the first half is the English dub prepared
in Europe). Besides this, I'd like to hear from other collectors who enjoy these and others of the genre.

I'm a big Steve Reeves fan but really haven't seen to many of the other Hercules films. I did enjoy the Gordon Scott TV pilot. When I was younger, I
remember a local channel had a Sunday Sons of Hercules movie festival each week. Some of them I liked but haven't seen them since that time.

The HERCULES movies aren't serials but pretty much self contained films.

Actually the topicThrills and Chills... ( Hercules, Tarzan, Bomba, Jungle Jim and what not all qualify).... is discribed as movie serials --and--adventure
films..... two differeent areas that may or may not have horror gemre tie-ins.

No, it's historical drama.

Historical drama? A man born of a Greek god and who has super-strength and fights monsters....Hmmmm......
Sorry! Either I missed something in all those European history classes I took in school or it is just ole fashioned two fisted, guy gets the girl at the end of the story after beating the bad guys. Adventure wins hands down! |

I wasn't being serious. That's what I tell the wife when I watch them.

That's what I tell the wife when I watch them. That you weren't being serious, or that they're "historical dramas?"

Now some of them, the peplums, are historical dramas.

I was happy that several flix on that "Warriors" set have the SONS OF HERCULES theme song at the beginning. I remember those from when I was a kid
as well. The show had a regular time-slot like a TV series, but I don't know if they edited the films down or showed them at feature length.

We had the 'Sons of Hercules Show' on Saturdays at 6pm or 7, something like that. Every film was shown in two parts, one hour this week, second hour the next week. So we got the whole movie--plus the theme song twice, lotsa commercials, and (I think) a recap at the beginning of part two. |

We had that same format in my area, Rick, but around 7 or 8 o'clock on Sunday mornings.

Ahhh...now I remember that as well. I seem to recall a narrator breathlessly recapping the previous week's installment.
Does anyone know if these pictures were originally conceived as "Son of Hercules" vehicles? Because I don't actually recall too many references in the movies themselves to the protagonists being descended from Hercules. Usually, there's a narrator at the beginning who informs us that this adventure concerns <name> the Son of Hercules who has been on a long sea journey, far from home, or whatever. Am I right in suspecting the American producers cashed in on the Hercules name-recognition factor by simply labeling every peplum hero they had as a Son of Hercules?

I think that the Sons of Hercules notion was purely for American TV release. Most of the movies feature characters named Maciste and other, less-familiar
names. Somewhere around here I have a list of (virtually) all of the pepla from '57-whatever ('65?), and none of the original foreign-language titles,
far as I can remember, refer to any offspring of Hercules. Probably it was felt that 'Hercules' was the most saleable and familiar name from these
movies, so why not hop on his pecs and ride off to success.

Many of the movies had the titles changed as well, to Hercules, Goliath, Samson, etc, from other names that are not as familiar.

Lobo's right; when many of these were dubbed for the English-language markets, more familiar names were given to the heroes. For example, HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN was actually a Maciste adventure. The SONS OF HERCULES banner allowed a lot of Italian sword & sandal films to exploit the interest in Hercules by just having the opening narration tell us the hero was descended from the Main Man, himself. By the time I came along this stuff was already on the airwaves, but didn't a number of these films play the drive-in circuit? I know a few of the Something Weird/Image DVD releases have galleries of posters, radio ads and trailers in English, so some of these must have made the rounds before being repackaged for TV. |
