People who imagine that others are discrediting them solely due to their age, yet ironically do not act their age.
People who dictate that others ought not dictate. People who gnaw on the same old bone just to keep a scuffle going. People who hold grudges and wave vendettas.

Sorry, I got nuthin' to add to the SAG/AFTRA thing. I avoid those discussions like the plague. I'm always grateful for those folks who offer their
(usually volunteer) services to the unions, but it seems that too often the same gene that makes them want to serve also makes them blithering idiots. And
just writing that much is raising my blood pressure, so I am outa here...

I go to a job related site and it embarrasses me that I may work with some of the people who post there. And the political nut cases are perhaps the worst. And
the ones who post how they get over at work. I can`t print what I think about them.

I remember back in the late 90's/early 2000's there seemed to be a pack of "people" (I'm being gracious connecting them with the human
race and since there were various screen names used to post it may or may not have been one or more persons) following Bill from board to board. The personal
attacks were daily and just non stop. And in the process these..."people"... managed to destroy the Sinister Cinema board as well. In the end they
were just going after anybody and everybody. The internet can be a scary place at times...

On the usenet, I can see where that could have been troublesome, but once a troll takes to some boards and harasses people, that is simply a case of poor
moderation.

On the work related site, one of these cretins actually threatens posters with finding out their IP address or somehow damaging their computers over the
internet because he claims to be an internet/computer expert. Now those type of posts appear to be threats and if it isn`t illegal it should be made illegal.
The mod never deletes such "threats". The jerk even related a story how he threatens websites by attempting to register and take over the site when
it comes up for renewal.

evilskippy wrote:There are several reasons for that, the chief of which, I suppose, is simply that I'm just not that kind of guy, and I'm not sure how I could turn myself into that kind of guy. I often wish I was, but of course, if wishes were horses etc.; this communication turmoil caused me a lot of sleepless nights. I was on a panel at a convention once with, among others, Robert Silverberg and Harlan Ellison. Harlan told some painful anecdotes about his mistreatment by some "fans" of his, like the guy who pelted Harlan's very expensive carved front door with raw eggs. Harlan was clearly very angry about all this. Silverberg, who's known Harlan since they were teenagers, asked him why he let these things bother him so. Harlan responded, "Don't you know that if I could be any other way, I would be?" Same for me. (Over the years, even over the years on this here now board, I have been able to lower the heat of my responses, and how I react to pressure. I'm still an overreactor, always will be, but I'm more relaxed in many ways. A friend once said I take umbrage faster than anyone else he knows. This was said by--astoundingly enough--Harlan Ellison.) Also, there are some people--including on this board--who consider it great fun, a kind of spectator sport, to arouse me (and others) to public anger. Here, I've found the only way to deal with that, to prevent my becoming angry (and looking like a fool), is to simply not respond to them at all. Pretty much what you (EvilSkippy) suggested. I have learned that people I thought, even assumed, were my friends are something else entirely, but there turns out to be nothing I can really do about this. Sometimes people will post comments that enrage many, not merely little old me, then later claim that OF COURSE we knew ALL ALONG that they were joking. I consider that just a self-serving dodge. I suppose my declining to comment to some of these people can puzzle onlookers, but there's little I can do about that. either. It's at times like these that I realize how intelligent the 12-Steppers' Serenity Prayer is in wanting the ability: to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. . But another reason, as you pointed out yourself, that there was nowhere to go, no website, where those two guys (and it was mostly two guys, one from Atlanta, one from Canada--who actually served time in jail for computer crimes) did not follow me. Every new board I went to, they showed up sooner or later and started in again, over and over, endlessly. I finally learned the name of the guy in Atlanta (he was somewhat active in science fiction fandom there), and considered showing up at his front door with a baseball bat, but I am generally opposed to revenge, at least in real life. In fiction, it can make for lively stories. I've since forgotten the jerk's name, which is probably for the best. Complaining to "sysops" did no good; most of them at the time believed in utterly unfettered communication, on the naive belief that people basically tended toward ethical behavior. They also strongly endorsed the concept of anonymity, that no one had a right to know the real name (or address) of anyone else online. Now, controls are tighter, true anonymity much harder, if not impossible. This has reduced the most serious, actually harmful, attacks by these cowards. I think you might have been around for one of the strangest cyberspace encounters I've had. On some usegroup, I posted a few of my Hollywood anecdotes--interesting and/or colorful things I've experienced, people I've met. A couple of years later, someone asked me to repost that stuff for newcomers; flattered, I did so. Then got an e-mail from one of the newbies chiding me for stealing someone else's stories. Huh? But those things DID happen to me, I protested. This correspondent told me that someone else had posted the same stories on a local site somewhere back east--someone who'd been on the site where I >first< posted the stories. He had simply appropriated them and passed them on as things that happened to >him<.

But back in the days I'm referring to that particular board didn't have a sophisticated system in which you could track/block ISP addresses/user names. By the time he was able to install/purchase a new system for the board the damage was done. A message board community can be splintered beyond
repair.

Bill, I'm not posting this to butter you up, but you and Beverly are two of the nicest, sweetest, gentlest, and most even tempered people I've ever
met. I've only seen you get curt with one person, and considering the circumstances your response to him was proportionate to the offense.
