Warner Oland plays a San Francisco business man who keeps his Asian ancestry a secret and pretends to be European. He is wicked thru and thru and keeps his dwarf brother in a cage! The brother is played by Angelo Rossitto and his makeup is so effective I actually thought it was a real Asian actor in the part. The equally wicked Chinese have an underground world beneath Chinatown. Dens of drugs and white slavery. SPOILER At the end, all appears lost but the heroine prays to God and the 1906 earthquake destroys all the evildoers. And the final shots of the dwarf brother repeatedly stepping on his brother`s face (who is half buried in rubble) and joyously laughing is a trip to see!

It was nice to see the tinted print and IMHO the effects were better than the sequence done by Universal in THE SHOCK. Watching Angelo Rossito step on Warner Oland's head was bizarre to say the least. Perhaps this title will eventually be made available as one of WB's Archive Editions.

(05/08/09 1:12 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I enjoyed seeing this film for the first time last year when it was showcased on TCM's Asian in Film festival. I guess you could say that this was his stepping block to playing Dr. Fu Manchu.
