It's amazing just how much song you can get in just about 2 minutes! They don't write 'em like that anymore.
My whole life I've been playing jacks with a square ball.

I'm dying laughing/crying here, Arch... I hadn't noticed that the first time. I especially like the way his voice goes off key before that, when he
stretches out the "I-----------"

At least these people have the guts to go up to YouTube and post their efforts. I would like to see any of the naysayers try that one out for size.
My favorite outtake, by the way:

For one thing, I can't sing or play guitar, Jack. Maybe that's why I'm smart enough NOT to post my efforts on YouTube! And is it so much about
"guts" as it is vanity?
But I've always felt that the "don't comment unless you can do it yourself" was kinda pointless. So we shouldn't coment on a poor film, a lousy song, a boring book, or anything unless we could do better - or at least try the same thing - ourselves? Bah. But thanks for posting your outtake -- it WAS funny!

Here is another fun cover:

So we shouldn't coment on a poor film, a lousy song, a boring book, or anything unless we could do better - or at least try the same thing - ourselves? Bah. Absolutely. Because then you don't have any point of reference if you haven't done it. How can you gauge how much effort was put into something without having tried the same thing yourself? If you, by your own admission, don't have any artistic talent, I can't expect you to understand this mentality, because then you have never put a great deal of effort into art, only to be criticized. While I don't often agree with Roger Ebert, I respect the man as a critic because he HAS had a hand in film-making in the past.

I have PLENTY of artistic talent; I just said I cannot sing or play guitar. I know there's a huge effort and fortitude in learning guitar
-- I tried, and it was just too frustrating for me, so I stopped. I admire all those who can play. Still doesn't mean I can't say that Person A is a
good singer/guitarist, while Person B is lousy. I mean, really.
Sorry Jack, we're at a huge disagreement on this one. People may certainly have opinions on a "bad" film, song, singer, book, (you name it), without having to be required to do the same themselves. Why is it okay for a person to say something is "good", then? Wouldn't the same criteria in your world have to apply? How can you say "that's a great book" if you've never written one yourself, right? How can I say I think LET IT BE is a great song when I've never written, sang, and released a record of my own, correct?
Every day oridinary people go to art museums to admire paintings, many of these patrons having never painted in their lives. They cannot deem a painting unappealing or badly rendered unless they're artists themselves? Pffffffftttttttt.

Part of putting something out there for the masses to consume (be it a song, a film, a book, a painting, a sculpture, whatever) is that it's going to be
judged. It may be praised, it may be criticized, or worse of all, it may be met with indifference.
If you can't take the good with the bad, and take both with a grain of salt, then you shouldn't put it out there. That's my opinion.

Absolutely, Rak. Movie crews spend a year or more working harder than imaginable to put out a good film, and then when it all comes down to the "premiere
cards". audiences quickly either give a "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down". And all the hard and grueling work which was put into it may be
dismissed in the snap of two fingers. That's the way it is. It's got nothing to do with appreciating the effort.

Look, there's a difference between judging someone's work and out right laughing at it, or mocking it.
There's no problem with criticism if it's legitimate criticism. But keep in mind the effort that goes into something before taking a crack at it. Yeah, the asian guy isn't the best singer, but listen to his guitar playing-- it's actually quite good, and to coordinate between singing and playing is a tough thing.

Well, although I wasn't laughing at or mocking anything here, I still feel that's my point. If you're going to put it out there on YouTube,
you'd better be prepared for all kinds of reactions, be it someone mocking/laughing, someone appreciating the effort, or maybe even someone loving it.
If you have your head on straight, you take what's good and leave the rest behind. Then you move on. |

I think if you ever tried making a professional film, your criticism of other films would be certainly less harsh. While there's certainly a realm of
exploitation and non-effort, there's also a facet of working within your limitations. It's the difference between no effort (such as H.G. Lewis, in my
opinion) and someone like Wood or Ray Dennis Steckler, who were honestly trying their hardest, and often gleamed a diamond in the rough from their efforts.
PLAN 9 is the apex of ludicrousy, but BRIDE OF THE MONSTER is certainly no worse than things that were being distributed by other low-budget companies at the
time and has a great performance from Bela. And Wood's JD films, although trite in their scripting, do have some nice camera work, lighting and editing.

As a struggling filmmaker for over 38 years, thank you, TServo4. Well-said, and appreciated by me and I'm sure, others. No offense guys, but it ain't fun to have your heart-and-soul labors made the butt of someone else's jokes. Where's the understanding, compassion and brotherhood in that? What's constructive or helpful about that?
