And I don't know where you get the idea it changes size over the course of the film since, when we first see it, it's that great shot I mentioned where it's at least a hundred yards in diameter. Sure, it may flow along on the ground, but it's big. Maybe you got the idea it was smaller earlier because it squeezed through a ventilation grid, or something. And if you guys think that THE MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD is big enough, STARSHIP TROOPERS has that beat in spades. I beg your pardon, but my monsters do fit the subject.

The latter should be disqualified because they are sentient (I might give you the underground flamethrower beetle, but that only appears once in closeup or twice in long shots). If you're disqualifying Gojira because it's Japanese then you gotta disqualify X-The Unknown because it's British. ... Reed

This first top ten list is for English-language films. Does Britain not speak the English language? My next top ten list will cover foreign-language films (all but one of which will be in Japanese, I believe). I apologize if that wasn't clear. And what does sentience have to do with anything? Giant monsters are giant monsters, whether they can think or not. (And what? You don't think that Godzilla thinks?) X THE UNKNOWN is on the list because I deem it so. It's a great movie with a giant monster. What more can I say? Remember that my first criteria for these things must be how good the movie is, not how good the monsters are. X THE UNKNOWN is better than any of those mentioned so far, although I am having some guilt about THEM! which none of y'all have mentioned. My preface to the next installment deals with this question specifically. And you're quite incorrect about the flame-thrower beetle. It has two major appearances, and in one the hero has to dispatch it with a bomb in a rather grueling sequence. Then there are also the fart-belching bugs that shoot the flames that bring down the starships. Then there's the brain bug. Lots of giant monsters, even if you don't count the great warrior bugs. How long has it been since you've seen STARSHIP TROOPERS?

And really... one could ask the same of virtually everything posted on this or any other bbs. By the way, those kinds of statements offer "0%" to the discussion. It was a minimalist summary of my position. I could have gone through every single line and made a contrary statement (i.e. - "Gorgo's claws are goofy" ""I don't think Gorgo's claws are goofy"). I noticed the omission of THEM! and wondered how this film could be left off the list (guess I'll have to wait for that explanation). Despite the mechanical ants, which have never bothered me and really don't look bad at all for what they are, THEM! is an amazingly well written, directed, acted, photographed, edited and scored giant monster movie. It doesn't get much better than THEM! The air of mystery, the brisk pace and sense of urgency all combine to produce a winner. Whether you're looking at science fiction movies, science fiction movies of the 1950s, or giant monster movies, THEM! has to be near the top for every aspect except those ants (which I still think work just fine). And who wasn't on the edge of their seat and genuinely moved when James Whitmore...? Well, you know the scene. Not many giant monster movies produce that sort of feeling.

It really is much easier to simply watch and enjoy movies than to a.) decide for yourself what would or would not fit the criteria and b.) rank your choices (do I really like blank more than blank? hmmm...) I already stated that Gojira would be 1st place for me, so that wasn't hard. I'd also like to find someplace in the top ten for Godzilla Vs The Thing (Mothra) which I consider the best of the sequels. There would be two three-way ties with Shusuke Kaneoko's Gamera trilogy and the Daimaijin trilogy. That's four slots taken up with Japanese films... I also already said that Gorgo should be somewhere in the top ten. I'd find spots for Them! and '33 King Kong (has anyone ever pondered why, considering the film's success, it took 20-something years for the giant monster craze to kick in?). That's seven spots taken and 3 left open. Hmmm... I prefer 20 Million Miles To Earth over Beast. I also prefer Valley Of Gwangi over Beast, there's two more spots... What about the last one, well, I could add Beast... But what about Night/Curse Of The Demon... definitely a giant monster despite its brief (2) appearances... But when it does show up... wow... and the rest of the film is so cool... required Halloween viewing this year. I wouldn't include any of the fantasy adventure films, as the monsters in them were never strictly giants. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad would be my favorite out of them, as I thought all of the elements were in top form and gelled so well... At The Earth's Core, which I consider an underrated film, would make at least the top 20. Wonderful, quasi-dinosaur something-or-other-beasties... I know I'm forgetting a lot... Yes, it was definitely an enlightening experience for me to create this first list... much tougher than I thought it would be, especially in establishing the criteria (yes... SIZE does matter, as Kez keeps reminding me). Also, trying to keep my personal favorites from influencing the list was excruciating, and I think I failed in at least one instance. It would have been so much easier just to say, "Hey folks -- here's what I like!" Anyway, I hope this list was at least fun for people to read.
