Mother, The Mummy, that guy with a snake crawling out of his mouth in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's a niche!

Recently, a wonderful friend gave me a set of Prismacolor markers. I'm swallowing my pride and posting my first two crude efforts. So gather round, my
fellow students in art and watch me struggle with a new medium. I've had to add pastels to both to get even close to what I was trying to achieve. And
let me say that my respect for those who have mastered these markers is extremely high. I do like the vivid color of the markers, and I think my second piece
does show improvement.
Ok, please back up a few feet from your monitor.
The first is Gorgo.

WOW!!
The markers may be new to you, ZD, but your talent is making them sing. Love Gorgo and that Mummy is an absolute stunner! I think there's going to be a sales spike on Prismacolor markers after enough people see these results. |

Great job with those markers, ZD!!!! You really rose to the challenge! The Mummy in particular works really well! That's the key - use the markers along
with other mediums to create dynamic effects. Good show!

Frank, thank you so much! Although I'm not at all comfortable with the markers as yet, the reaction they've received will no doubt motivate me to do
another one when the inspiration strikes. And I've already thanked you privately for mentioning me in your acceptance speech, but let me do so again here
on the board. Dang, I almost fainted when you started talking about me!
Bryan, thank you too! I've just completed several more monochromatic ones, including Glenn Strange as The Monster, the Colossal Beast, THE WEREWOLF, and today I did one of Lon Chaney from LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT. Look for them right here over the next few weeks. I may get busy on another one very soon. Here's one I did not too long ago from CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN.

Roger, very nice! Good composition, nice attention to light source, and detail! It's a winner! You said you did this one recently? I think the pieces are
getting stronger by the minute! Love it!

Thanks for the kind words, Captain! I've recently been doing stuff from the 30s and 40s (yet to be posted), but I still find myself drawn (pun
intended) to these little cheapies from the 50s. I like trying to help bring them some attention. They worked their magic on me when I was at the right age.

Hal, thanks for usin' all them fancy words on this old Hoosier country bumpkin! I'm sure they mean good things.
Here's a portrait I did for our old art gallery which we had in Nashville, Indiana, many, many moons ago.

Thanks, Cappy. No, I did that from a photograph.
I did not put any monsters up in our art gallery. We did have a couple of Lon Chaney clowns and a few movie stars, comedy legends, etc. And landscapes. Landscapes were very popular in the area. So were paintings on saws, but I never did one of those. Did ya ever see a 'saw painting'? Would you like to turn this into an Abbott & Costello routine? If I had mastered
the art of saw paintings, perhaps I'd still be there getting richer by the day. And there were those paintings on velvet of tigers. Never did one of
those either. 'Elvis' was also very popular on velvet. Probably still is. Yep. I shoulda done more Elvis and less Groucho. The public, bless
'em, must have an Elvis face to look at.
I'm so happy I'm not trying to appease 'the public' any more. It's much more fun drawing for Monster Kids! ZD

Hey ZD! I think we're all happy that you're not just painting for Joe Q. Public anymore, and that you've returned to your Monster Kid roots!
Love the ultra-vivid searing blue prismacolour Gorgo! And the First Nations lady painting reminds me a lot of a younger Cree woman I once dated. She had that same captivating/all-knowing look in her eyes... Now, how's about a velvet Frankenstein? By the way, I just finished watching the Rondo Awards clip in which Frank Dietz so honourably mentions other artists on the board while giving his acceptance speech, and I gotta say that Frank, you're one class act all the way...(Most of us knew this already, but I just had to reiterate the fact after seeing that clip!). The process is reversing itself! |

Well I got around doing The Dracula painting, it turned out better then I thought, but still Im way..... way behind everyone in talent.
I can draw, and use color pencil with the best, but painting is very challenging, and I am falling in love with it. Hope you guys enjoy, JB |
