Who's this Blake guy again?

Tom, I thought you were show biz and news savvy. Robert Blake is the former child star who went on to star in the successful 1970's television show
Baretta. While he is best remembered for Baretta he also played Mickey in The Little Rascals, Little Beaver in the Red Ryder B Westerns of the 1940's, he
played a police officer in Electra Glide in Blue and a creepy side of the protagonist's mind in David Lynch's Lost Highway.
Blake is best known for his most prophetic role, however, as a murderer in the film version of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. Several years ago he made the news by being arrested for the murder of his wife. His wife, who was purported to be a gold digger, was murdered outside Robert Blake's favorite Italian restaurant. Blake went to trial and was acquitted by a jury of his peers. I hope that answers your question. |

"I agree with you, Scoundrel -- it's just an attempt to boost the how-low-can-you-go? numbers of a website that's as little-known as Lon
Chaney's THE OLD COBBLER (1914). I'll happily eat all these words, on bended knee even, at the LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT re-premiere, but 'til then ...
pffffffffffffft"

I for one will be happier than a pig in mud if this turns out to be true. After all when I was a young pup reading FAMOUS MONSTERS, Edisons FRANKENSTEIN was
considered lost and now I have a copy on DVD. So anything is possible.
But to quote Kubricks DR. STRANGELOVE : " WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL THE WORLD, EH..?" " WHY DID YOU KEEP IT A SECRET...?" Scoundrel (a.k.a. "Melvin Bloodlust") |

I first learned about this on Harlan Ellison's forum this morning with a message from "Doc":
"A fellow I know says he has found a print of a lost silent classic film: LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, starring Lon Chaney. Apparently, it was tucked away in storage under its UK release title, THE HYPNOTIST. His backstory on the find can be found (and eventually read) here: http://thehorrordrunx.yuku.com/topic/753 , and naturally any other Webderlanders are welcome to peruse and suggest. His trouble is, he's having a whee of a time getting anyone who can do anything about getting it out to the public to get it out to the, erm, public. Before the print succumbs to its own nitrate-stock self." Then I checked over here for up-to-the-minute news (briefly; I'm at work, so forgive me if I missed in scanning and am posting anything redundant). Ain't it Cool news is also on the case: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/37599 It would be nice if LAM were found, but count me amongst the pessimistic. |

Here's a version of what I posted at horrordrunx:
>>But they didn't because no one wanted to take responsibility for it, or rock any boats, because that might endanger their job security. I don't understand that. Why would alerting bosses to a major film find endanger anyone's job security?? Plus, sorry, but I still don't get -- at all -- why someone as immersed in the world of horror and history as you are, and were, seemingly just shrugged and walked away from making sure the film was unearthed from where it was. This wasn't back in the 60s or 70s, but 1998, when the fan Internet was young but growing and there were plenty of ways to spread the word. You say you saw the film frames with your own eyes, HELD the cannister. You marked it with magic marker and then never said anything publicly until now? It makes no sense. What's particularly hard to grasp is that you're not some backwoods UFO abductee coming forward, but an intelligent and Web-savvy member of the horror community. To tell friends about it is one thing, but to never say anything year after year after year in any public way just seems too hard to believe. We all act in different ways, so OK, but this just seems out of nowhere. Again, you;re not saying you heard the film exists, or were promised a look. You say you HELD THE FILM IN YOUR HANDS. And then a decade later you come forward and say, oh by the way? As the new X-FILES film says, 'I want to believe,' and yet... david |

The guy obviously read Ted's postings on the matter, here at the CHFB, and created his own version of the story. Come on, this is fake, a "let's
see how far this can go and get a laugh out of it and pump up interest in our website at the same time." And who would take a website/buddy group named
"horror drunx" or someone named "Sid Terror" seriously? What juvenile nonsense. I take Bat Mite more seriously.... Please let's stop
giving these clowns attention.

I agree Latarnia. The minute I saw this guys name, red flags went up.
I've found more than my share of lost 3-D films and I never used some childish alias to announce my discovery to the archival community. This whole thing smells of someone desperate for attention and pulling some lame stunt in order to get it. |

Has anybody done any contacting of the archives in question (other than the fact that apparently Ted talked to them about it a little bit ago)?
If they have an official response of "checked again - nothing there", then there is nothing more to see here. |

<< " Miss Clark got up before you yesterday and told you a whopper." << This tired old gag is no Whopper. It's a White Castle. No,
HALF a White Castle. Yaaaaaaaawn.
I read here that the story on the Drunx website is staggeringly long (I didn't bother to look). Seems like a lot of time to waste on a cliched, doomed attempt at a prank. Oh well. It's THEIR time. |

Which brings up the real question:
Why on Earth is it that LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT has become to most wanted lost film out there? From reviews, it appears the film wasn't that good. The remake wasn't any better. Plus there are more worthy lost Chaney films that should be found. A BLIND BARGAIN being one, THE MIRACLE MAN being another. What is it that makes people come up with a new story on LAM each year? I can't remember if it was that Chaney documentary or somewhere else but someone that had seen the film said that if it were ever found people would be disappointed with it and stop talking about the film all together. I've often wondered if this film would be forgotten after being found and everyone watched it. Oh yeah, my offer is still open to Sid. |

That's kinda what happened with Spanish DRACULA. It was great to see it the first time ... it was interesting the second time ... But I bet "the second" (and last) time for most of us was 10 or more years ago. |

Since part of my original post disappeared....here it is again....
It is amazing how at least once a year we get a "sighting" that a print of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT exists. I read the posting by "Sid Terror" and found a lot of problems with it. First off, the fact that the parties (except Ted Newsome) are dead, makes me question the validity of this story. Maybe it is too many tall tales by Boze Hadleigh-types, but it does make one wonder. Second, EVERY film archive and archivist I know would JUMP at finding the print. I cannot believe NO archive -- or even a studio like Warners who owns the MGM library -- would not pounce on this find. Third, Dick May was at MGM since the early 1970s (possibly even the late 1960s) and did a COMPLETE catalog of all the films, examining every reel. My friend and fellow Chaney fan, Jon Mirsalis has his hand-written notes for everything. By the way, Dick May also moved to Turner & Jon asked him about LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, BIG CITY, TOWER OF LIES and THUNDER (before the recent clips emerged) and he said that with absolute certainty that MGM had no material on any of them. (As an aside, Jon told me that it was while doing a complete catalog of all holdings that the print of THE ANIMAL KINGDOM (1932) turned up in the vault, which was previously considered lost.) Fourth, when Kevin Brownlow and Patrick Stansbury were doing the Chaney documentary for TCM they had COMPLETE ACCESS to every list of film holdings in the Turner library (including shorts, missing footage, etc.) and did a cross check of ALL Chaney films made by Goldwyn or MGM. Nothing on LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT or THE HYPNOTIST ever showed up. Fifth, I am suspect of the story when the person cannot differentiate between AMC and TCM. Also, TCM never announced a showing of the film (other than the still recreation) on the cable channel. Sixth, This is an FYI.....The film was originally called THE HYPNOTIST. I have a copy of the script with Thalberg's typed approval on the cover. I also have a 1927-28 studio campaign book that lists the film under that title. (A picture of which can be found in my second book on Chaney.) I hate to say it, but as of now it sounds like another rumor to add to the pyre. That is NOT to say a print could never show up. Look at the lost footage of THUNDER, or the recent discovery/restoration of 3 reels from Chaney's 1917 TRIUMPH, or that POOR JAKE'S DEMISE has turned up in Europe. But unless a reliable source (like Kevin Brownlow) called me with the information and until I am sitting in a theatre and see the film projected on the screen, I remain VERY skeptical. Michael F.
