I just loved the movie BURNT OFFERINGS, I thought Reed was marvelous in this as he was in everything. This movie is underrated. Great cast and great book if you can find it. I also hope to see The Shuttered Room released on DVD in the U.S.

Quote: I agree John. I saw this in the theater with my dad when it first came out. We both loved it. Some really creepy stuff in there, especially the 'Mr. Death' chauffeur haunting Ollie. He was great in the film, along with the marvelous Karen Black and Bette Davis. I bought the DVD a couple years back - I'll have to pull it out again soon. |

I was looking up Mr Reed on imdb and it said that he was seriously considered for James Bond but that his reputation as a drinker scared the producer off.
He would I think made an interesting James Bond as he had an strong pysical pesecene and a quiet yet deadly manner. |

Quote: Since reading your post, catmandu, I've been having fun visualizing Oliver Reed fighting with Lotte Lenya, Robert Shaw and Bambi and Thumper. I bet he could have taken them all on at once--and still had time to go to the pub and arm wrestle. ZD |

I think he would have made an interesting Tarzan.
His best role were the outwardly civilized man with the beast just lurking under the surface. |

Bob-
My aging brain has trouble taking in threads which are more than one page. ;) I did, however, get a big laugh out of your Peter O'Toole post on this thread. My wife loved that one too! My theory is that O'Toole has survived to a ripe old age, despite his carousing, because he has a gentler nature and probably a better sense of humor about himself. Love the guy! And thanks for that entertaining post. ZD |

I have a soft spot for his performance (cockamamie southern accent and all) in the squib-happy Wild Bunch wannabe THE HUNTING PARTY. Favorite scene: Ollie and his captive, Candice Bergen, chow down on fresh peaches.

I apologize Bijou Bob.
I missed your thread and was walking on your heels as my Dear Mother was found of saying. Sorry about that as Agent 99 used to say. I think that Don Adams could have been a good Matt Helm as there were always scenes in the Get Smart series where he would get serious and save the day. |

Quote: What a way to go! :) I also want to add a vote for Burnt Offerings... that's a creepy film, and if Oliver Reed had been the father in the original Amityville Horror, I think it's reputation would be greater today - he pulled off a more belivable slow burn than James Brolin did in AH, very subtle work. And an interesting aside - there have been many women I've talked to who have expressed major cruses on Oliver Reed, both young and svelt and older and puffier... they said he just had some kind of quality. |

Good shot, Skeleton. You know, had he landed the role of James Bond, Reed would have been the only actor to portray him whose own lifestyle closely mirrored that of 007.

Ollie Reed fans take note; Odd Lots/Big Lots has a number of MGM DVDs marked down to $3, including BURNT OFFERINGS. And, for those who may have been too young
to remember Reed's debut appearance on THE TONIGHT SHOW with Johnny Carson, here's the segment, complete in three parts:

HECKYL AND MR. HYPE. (A film that seems to have vanished off the face of the earth.) |

I just watched Gladiator for the first time a few weeks ago (a bit late on the Oscar winners), and man, what a terrific final performance from Reed. Kind of
nice that his final bow was in such a great film (when you consider some of the crap actors ended up in for their final films).

GLADIATOR was a very well done film! Yes, Oliver Reed ended on a high note. (Unlike, say, Peter Sellers and THE FIENDISH PLOT OF FU MANCHU.)
