Sometimes he comes to my place with an idea of what he wants to see, and it's almost always stuff he's already seen and knows. I let him suggest two movies for tonight, so he chose ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE (this one he already knows and enjoys) and then he said he wanted to try WEREWOLF OF LONDON (1935). He has never seen this, and I just told him at the start of the film: "Don't expect this one to be like THE WOLF MAN", just to caution him.
We had a great time with A&C MEET J&H, and frankly I don't think I would have had as much fun alone with it, having seen it by myself so many times. We had a blast laughing at all sorts of things, intended or otherwise.
But then we got to WEREWOLF OF LONDON, and at the 14 minute mark, he got antsy and said "Yeah, I see what you mean about this -- it really drags". I could tell he just was not into this at all, so I just grabbed the remote and shut the DVD player off. I just said "forget it - show's over" and I chided him a bit, asking him why he won't give things he doesn't know a fair chance, and trying to explain that it's necssary at the beginning to setup the doc as a botanist, his wife, her wife's childhood boyfriend... I mean, we were just getting into the revelation from Dr. Yogami that he was the guy who bit Henry Hull when my friend got "bored"!!
What's with people that start to watch a movie yet won't give a film they haven't seen a chance to at least get started, before giving up? I showed him stuff like DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931) in the past, and he didn't want to stick that one out, either. But keep in mind that this guy is somewhat interested in the classic monsters and Universal Horrors in general, so I don't get it. He had no use for DRACULA'S DAUGHTER one other time (he said "I expected someone like Lily Munster, not this sophisticated-looking woman"), he had no use for THE INVISIBLE RAY or THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS. Yet he did like THE BLACK CAT (1934) and SON OF DRACULA one time.
