Classic fairy tales seem to be in short supply, but what else could Disney delve in to?

Maybe in a few years, Disney will get back to 2-D animation (I hope!). I hate to admit but their last few attempts at 2-D animation didn't pique my
interest at all. I love movies like BAMBI and 101 DALMATIONS or THE RESCUERS but I think Disney animated features are at their best when they tackle more time
tested fare. Fairy tales are of course a given, but I'm the sort who thought Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME was a gimme (Not so much the idea of
a sequal. Now that is just crass.).

There are plenty of classics that Disney has yet to tap! What about Rumplestilskin, Rapunzel, Princess and the Pea, the Snow Queen (would LOVE to see Disney
tackle that one in 2-D), Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, The Nightengale, The Blue Bird (been done before, but Disney could blow 'em out of the water),
The Swan Princess, and so many more.
I never could quite understand why Disney decided to delve into subjects that were far from fairy tale material (like Hunchback). While I found that particular film to be wonderfully animated, I also thought some of the themes (especially the sexually-charged ones) didn't belong in a Disney animated feature. Rod |

Your wish is Disney's command - they are working on a traditional 2D version of The Princess And The Frog to be released in 2009!!!
The story itself isn't traditional, at least the setting is updated! I can't wait!!! |

Fantastic news!! Thanks for sharing, Dr. Acula!
I am sooooo relieved that Disney is making 2-D animation again of any sort. And it's a fairy tale to boot! Woo hoo! And as fascinated I am with both the 1920's and New Orleans, I'm eager to see the Disney take on such a setting. My only concern is Randy Newman. He is great in small doses but I can't imagine him scoring an entire musical. But I hope to be pleasantly suprised.

I agree, points off for Newman - but extra credit for the voodoo angle (the fairy godmother and villain are in a voodoo vein, according to the wiki article)!

I think that's great, but was the fairtale called The Frog Princess? I always thought it was a Frog Prince, and he needed to be kissed by a human princess!

Ever since he became head of Disney animation, John Lasseter has vowed to produce some cell animation features.

John Lasseter is head of Disney Animation now?! Fantastic! I may even have to give WALL-E a try if it is one of his projects.

In '95, I gave a three-minute 'Dracula' pitch to Eisner, Katzenberg and an audience of development artists at Disney. I stuck to the
spirit of the Stoker novel, and they seemed to like it. I still think it would make a great animated film if handled atmospherically. What we need today is a
thrilling, old-fashioned supernatural tale like the Universal films, one fit for all ages.

I wouldn't mind seeing an animated version of MGM's Wizard of Oz, using the music and soundtrack of the original. Disney animation and MGM's
magic--I think it would be remarkable.

Great idea to do "Dracula"... Done right, it would really be something. Disney would probably add three wisecracking bats as sidekicks though!
I've often thought about a Disney version of "The Phantom of the Opera". I don't know what they'd do with the ending... probably change it to a happier one. There's already an animated one floating through video land, which people say is fairly effective. With Disney's expertise, budget and artistry going for it, it could be a mini-masterpiece. There was talk of a live-action version of the musical "Les Miserables" in the late eighties when it started out. It fell through however, and many of the most famous (and best) actors are getting too long in the tooth to do such a project. But an animated version could still work, with the original cast members doing the voices! This would also get around the show's half-sketched, minimalistic staging, seeing as nothing's too surreal for animation. I picture it being a sort of amalgam of FANTASIA and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME... Now, if only I had the millions required to finance a series of animated motion pictures... |

All this has got me thinking about this great website I stumbled on a few years ago. Some dedicated arist has put out hundreds of sketches of Harry Potter
characters, demonstrating just how an animated version would look. For anyone who's read the books and been a bit disappointed by the variable film
adaptations, this is a truly fantastic website: Harry Potter Art.

About The Princess & the Frog:

Oh, I can think of several fantasy projects that could be stupendous as Disney animation projects:
The "Myth" series by Robert Asprin, for example... "Xanth" by Peirs Anthony... "Tales of Hoffmann" "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by Poe, done in an episodic style, similar to Fantasia... "Girl Genius" by Phil and Kaja Foglio... (available to read online) |

As a follow up to the post above regarding a remake of DR SYN
ALIAS THE SCARECROW, I'm amazed that Disney didn't think to use the Jack Sparrow films as a platform to launch a reboot of the Scarecrow franchise. The two characters (the Scarecrow and Jack Sparrow) have appeared together a few times in the pages of the DISNEY ADVENTURES comic digest, which you might have seen at the check-out line at your grocery store. Considering how popular costumed heroes are these days it seems like a natural step for Disney to bring back the Scarecrow soon. Click on the image below to go to the blog of the comic artist that worked on that series, there's more Scarecrow art there.

Man - that looks like a great comic! And to reinvent the Scarecrow in a modern "Pirates of the Caribbean" big effects film could be great as well!

I wonder why Walt Disney has not considered doing a theatrical animated feature based on or at least inspired by one of the Carl Barks adventure stories
featuring Scrooge McDuck, Donald and the three nephews? Have the Disney characters become so passé that they don't rate the big budget treatment?
There'd be plenty of merchandizing opportunities in such a project. The whole Disney stable of animated 'Toon stars could have cameos. Why not? Are the
Beagle Boys holding out for more money?

Would love to see Disney finally do some live-action adaptations of children's novels like Nancy Julian's "The Peculiar Miss Pickett"
(although it's probably too simlar to MARY POPPINS), Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth", and finally get the rights to Zilpha
Snyder's "Black and Blue Magic." I think a live action or animated film based on Norman Bridwell's "How to Care for Your Monster"
would be a lot of fun.
I'd also like to see what Disney could do with "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and as once was rumored, a Gamera or a Mothra film. JBK |
