With the way the progress on this flick is snowballing, I half expect to see this wonderful new version on TCM next time they run METROPOLIS.

What a minute... an uncut 16mm METROLPOLIS print from a private collection in Bueno Aires? Sounds like a high-ranking Nazi died and his priviate film
collection was uncovered...

If you read the press release,... it was a collector from 1928 who we have to thank,...not some member of the Nazi party.
Sheesh. |

Incidentally, there's already a lively METROPOLIS topic in this folder: http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum.yuku.com/topic/15962?page=4

This version of METROPOLIS is the 153 minute version (13740' at 24fps) released in Berlin on Jan 10, 1927. When Paramount acquired the film, they cut it
down to 118 minutes (10631') for world distribution, and it was that cut which was re-released in Germany in August 1927 and subsequently accepted by Ufa
as being the "definitive" version.
The "director's cut" of METROPOLIS, which might have been shown only once to the public, was much longer (although not 8 hours, as one post claimed). Sadly, that negative was cut to make the 153 minute release version.

I just checked Glenn Erickson's review of METROPOLIS in his DVD Savant book. The version he reviewed was Kino's DVD, which had a
123 minute running time. So if this is indeed the 153 minute international version, it's substantially longer. Of course, there's some question over
the fps timingm byt even so this is a substantial increase in running time..

darren nemeth wrote: To be specific, that's actually footage of an earlier in-house screening of the footage at the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin, rather than coming from yesterday's Buenos Aires press conference. The commentary notes that the Argentinian archive where this 16mm copy was located is so poorly funded that it couldn't even afford to turn on the heating last winter; so it's hardly a wonder that the place doesn't have enough staff to work through all its hidden treasures. The 16mm copy appears still to be missing around 5 minutes from the 153-minute version, seemingly due to nitrate decomposition of the 35mm print prior to
its duplication to 16mm in the 1970s; in that sense, it really was a case of this version having been put on 16mm 'just in time', even if no-one seems
to have realised its full significance at the time.

already carries quite enough baggage in terms of supposed Nazi associations. While one can certainly lend credence to the idea of some of its bombastic
monumental imagery and architecture being 'pre-fascistic' in nature (both Goebbels and Hitler were known admirers of the film, and might conceivably
have taken some aesthetic inspiration from it), this notion has on various occasions been taken to quite implausible lengths by people intent on uncovering
ever more 'pre-fascistic imagery' within the film.

"A print of the film was purchased by film historian and critic Manuel Peña Rodríuez ... In 1992, the collection was donated to the Museo del Cine Pablo
Ducrós Hicken, and for years they tried in vain to have people in Germany to know about this version. They didn't care until film
historian and collector Fernando Martín Peña, called Luciano Berratúa in Spain after looking for his phone in a guide."
This is unnerving... How does it fit in with the usual Restoration company's assertions that, "we looked to every possible source"? Best, -Craig W.

<<How does it fit in with the usual Restoration company's assertions that, "we looked to every possible source"?>>
That's just archive-speak for "We checked all the major archives". Of course they didn't check every possible source. That would have been impossible, so nobody ever does. That's why wonderful treasures like this keep popping up. South American archives have recently proven to be a treasure trove of foreign films. I believe the only copy of DER STUDENT VON PRAG (the 1930 sound rerelease) turned up in Mexico or Uruguay. A few years back, I found a listing for Hitchcock's THE MOUNTAIN EAGLE in a Mexican archive. As this is Hitchcock's only lost feature, I immediatly contacted the archive to confirm the identity of the print. I never received a reply, but within a week the title mysteriously disappeared from their database. BTW... keep your ears open for news about the Marx Brother's classic A NIGHT AT THE OPERA. Apparently someone recently located a print in a foreign archive which contains additional footage and alternate takes. It hasn't hit the national news yet (and it probably won't, since METROPOLIS is a bigger find), but I'm sure something will slip out sooner or later. |

Slightly OT, but has anyone heard more on these 2 items?
