I think you've caught Gloria Talbot's likeness, ZD. And I love how you handle the various textures -- it's almost tactile. And the lighting, with
the highlighting separating her from the background like that, very 'American' (as opposed to British, Euro etc.). You've caught her expression,
and especially those haunting eyes, even though .... (and I hope you'll forgive me if I'm brutally honest here) .... the eyeline is perhaps a wee bit
skewed (not in a parallel line with the mouth). But hey, my favorite artist Jack Kirby used to do that all the time for effect, though inkers would always
'correct it' for him. And that notwithstanding, it does still look like her.
Well and truly done. |

I do so appreciate the input from all of you. I'm pretty much putting up all of the work I've done and am doing now because I am a
non-professional and I hope this is providing a learning experience for others besides myself. Just remember that I've had no profesional training (or
experience, for that matter) so what you're seeing is basically coming from my gut and my instinct. I certainly aim to improve but, at this point in my
life, I have no illusions of ever achieving what I might have once done if circumstances had been a little different years ago.
As I said before, the closest I came to professional training was by standing over the shoulder of a highly skilled pastel portrait artist for weeks on end. I never had a 'formal' lesson from her. I believe she was also self-taught. Her name was Sandy Speagle (or was it Spiegle?). It's been so long I've forgotten and I've lost contact with her. The closest I ever came to working as a professional was when I got up the nerve to rent my own space in the mall. I definitely remember drawing those parallel eye lines first. Now that I'm not trying to sell my art to the general public anymore, I have dropped some of my 'preciseness'. I guess that along with the freedom of not having to depend on my art for a living anymore, I become more 'subconscious' with my drawing, with interesting, but sometimes mixed results. I'll try to add a little more of the 'consciousness' to my work as I keep on going. One more thing-- we're in a very bad financial situation now. On one hand, I'd like to reach a level where I could sell my work. But, on the other hand, I'm fearful that if this ever happened, I would freeze up and stop drawing like I did years ago. So I want to thank everyone on this board again for the encouragement and the opportunity to draw again (without editorial pressure) and bring some of the fun I used to have back into my life. This is really helping me through some very bad times. I love you all! ZD |

Here's two more on the same blue paper. I did these after 'Gloria'.

ZD, I love the way you pick characters to do that are more obscure! Are you taking requests? I'd like to see you do that Innkeeper from Dracula that tells
Renfield not to go to the Castle---or maybe the big heavy set Zombie from White Zombie, the one with the walrus-esque moustache! That Innkeeper was played
marvelously by the actor. The look in his eyes when he tells Renfield, "No!" It gives me the creeps every time I watch Dracula.

Thanks, Captain. Sure, I can do an occasional request--as long as I have good source material. I'll see about that Innkeeper. I love doing the more
obscure characters. It's a big part of the fun I'm having!

A week or so ago, on the THEM thread, M F Berry asked me if I'd ever done a Giant Behemoth. Well, now I have and, Mark, this one's for you!

Holy smoke, ZD, what can I say? Not only is it amazing that you chose to do a Behemoth because of my comment, but then to come up with such an absolutely
gorgeous piece of work! I actually gasped when it came up on my screen. I know I'm partial to the ol' Behemoth, but I too think it just may be your
best creation yet. Bravo, Bravo, Bravo! Boy, I wish I had a print of it for my wall ... at least, it's about to become my computer background!
Wonderful work ... thanks so much for sharing it (and all your other great art) with us. Mark Berry |

Gosh, I'm both amazed and delighted by the response from all of you! Thank you!!! This piece is my latest on the black paper, but it won't be the
last! I still have some earlier ones to post as well. I love to do scenes like this from black and white movies.

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all. Joni Mitchell--"Both Sides, Now"

Hey! How could that Crawling Eye look at Both Sides Now? He only has one eye! No stereo vision there! I think it would have been more appropriate to say
I'll Look at Both Sides Eventually. It would take him a while to crawl around to the other side.

You'll have to ask Joni that, Captain, because I'm pretty sure she had this movie in mind when she wrote that song. Of course, her memory could have
been a little cloudy.

Hey guys! I haven't had the opportunity to post in this (or many other) thread recently, I am always compelled to WORSHIP the Zombie Dad, and get all tongue-tied and googly-eyed over his work (in this case, his Behemoth and Crawling Eye---love the eerie blue tinged glow!!!)
