Friday The 13th remake |
Lead | |
|
I looked back about eight pages and didn't see a thread for this one. I am usually against remakes but since I hated the original so much I don't mind
seeing Hollywood make another go at this one. I am just hoping there is more to the remake than just a bunch disposable teens getting whacked in various ways.

The original was always a piece of junk to me, along with its sequels, so the idea of a remake doesn't especially bother me, either.
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

I enjoy the original, and all the sequels as well. I was 18 when the first one came out, though I didn't see it at the time and began with PART II. I then
made it a regular routine of going to see each and every new installment in the theater with my friends when each first opened. So I'm a big fan of the
original series, and have always accepted it for what it is - just a maniac in a mask slaughtering people in a variety of different methods. I let my hair down
when seeing these movies and don't go into them expecting high art, or even anything which resembles a real movie most of the time.
Having said all this, it may come as a surprise to those who know how much I hate unnecessary modern remakes that I'm not completely against the idea of a new version of FRIDAY THE 13th. Because the old series has run its course, and there is nothing much else you can do with it. I see a new F13 as a re-boot of a tired series, kind of like what happened with CASINO ROYALE and the current James Bond franchise, or the new BATMAN films. I realize comparing these films to F13 is sort of like comparing apples and pits, but all the same -- I'm in!

Such as...?Anything really. Wouldn't take much to improve on the original movie. Maybe flesh out the characters a little bit? Maybe the audience would then care what happens to the teens rather than just watching them get offed one by one. |

Not that I expect the filmmakers to stick with this... but Jason wasn't actually the killer in the first one, was he?

I would think a remake would dispense with the Mrs. Voorhees angle (or at least, deal with it pretty quickly) and move straight on to Jason hacking and
slashing. Or maybe not.

I'm actually looking forward to this. I LOATHED the first one-the only one I've seen, but the character has become pretty iconic over the years. So I
really think this could be good if done with a sense of humor, taking the one good element from those movies and making something over the top and fun. Which
is why I was beside myself with glee when talk came up of Tarantino being involved. Unfortunately I have less faith in the folks who did that awful Texas
Chainsaw remake, but from the reports I've read they're one the right path.

I'm curious about this one as well. I don't think it will be suspenseful or good. Then again, I could be wrong; and all the more reason to go see it.
I respect the first and second films in the series because they were suspenseful. Of course, they also incorporated graphic violence. Nevertheless, that stuff scared the life out of audiences. It wasn't like what it became with part three, on. It's ashame they didn't ask Betsy Palmer back as Mrs. Voorhees. She's alive and well, as far as I know. It would have been nice to have her as something of a bridge between old and new.

They had asked her to appear in Freddy vs. Jason, but she balked at the "low" salary they offered her, whatever that was. Considering she only took the role in the first place because she needed money for a car, I don't think she's got much love for the films. That's my take, anyway.

Well, if you've seen the original FIRST movie, you know that Jason himself is DEAD. He wasn't even really a character in the film, outside of a few dreamy flashbacks where you see someone bouncing up and down in the water and screaming, "help me, mommy!" When he grabs the girl and drags her out of the boat in the conclusion, I think it was pretty obvious this was all in her mind. Or it may not be in her mind -- When Jason shows up in Part II, it completely negates the reason for Mrs. Vorhees going on a rampage. If Jason was alive all this time, what's the point? I don't think mom knew he was alive. Works for me. Besides, all that mattered from that point on was to watch for the killings, regardless of details.

It wouldnt be bad to have a hyperstylized make-over and a stronger story. Not necessarily dispense with Mrs Voorhees just make a respectable film. But in all
probabilities this will be a by-the-numbers teen slasher. *sigh*

Well, there are two things wrong with your theory, Joe. For one, when Jason pulls the girl into the water, it's the same Jason as twenty years before (or ten years, can't recall). He hasn't aged a bit and is still a teenager.

Or, Jason could have been dead, but his mother's killing in his name and eventual death may have been that spark that brought him to life. It's no
ridiculous than any of the other ways he came back to life.
I know they didn't expect to make a sequel, but that's what retconning is for!

If Jason actually survived the swimming accident, what happened? Did he just crawl out of the water and into the woods, where he built a little hut and shut himself away from mom? I doubt it. And is that a bad thing? It certainly wouldn't be the first time a sequel (or entire franchise for that matter) was later built around an original film, throwing all caution to the wind. Plus, if they really needed to, they could have come up with some way as to how Mrs. Voorhees regained her head. It's been happening in horror sequels forever. It just seems to me like this is an ideal case of overthinking what is basically a dopey throwaway series of films, Rod. So Mother died, Jason rose ... lotsa carnage ensued!

One of the reasons I respect the second film in the series is the fact that Jason kept his mother's head. In this sequel, they were trying to be true to
character development. By part four, none of this matter anymore. Pamela Voorhee's head and the shack where Jason resided were no longer seen. Thus,
Jason became the killing machine he is today. He even left camp to go to the Big Apple.
The original story vanished. As Joe mentioned, this isn't "the first time a sequel (or entire franchise for that matter) was later built around an original film, throwing all caution to the wind." |

And I'm certainly not expecting there to be any kind of continuity with the old ones. Don't really know what to expect of this, but I'm guessing it'll be more along the lines of Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (yes, I said it, and I already regret it.) where they DO throw all caution to the wind. They're trying, bottom line, to make money off a tried-and-true name franchise. And the folks going to see this associate Jason with the hockey mask, which is why they're using it and probably not worrying too much that he didn't don the mask until Part 3. |
