My first time through the Haunted Mansion in Disneyland |

Oh man... I was like 9 years old and went through with my older sister. I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven man. from the very first second I stepped
onto the property that became my favorite ride of all time. I just couldn't BELIEVE they made that ceiling "disappear" in the beginning of the
ride where the guy was hanging LOL, I loved it. Back then they had a lot of merchandise you could buy also, like the glow in the dark cards that looked like
the artwork in the gallery. They looked normal in the sunlight, but bring them in the dark and they changed like the ones in the Mansion. The record album with
Ron Howard doing the voice over, I think there was a board game too...

The Haunted Mansion is always my first stop on visits to Disneyland. Each time I go I'm worried they will have replaced the hanging man as too scary for
little kids but nope, he's still there. I actually hate when they dress it for the holidays with the Nightmare Before Christmas theme.

My first time on the ride wasn't until I was about 13 or 14. I was riding with a girl I went to school with and my anxiety level prior to boarding was nearly off the charts - but I had to act cool, of course. I had heard so many things about the ride from friends and family, my knees were close to knocking by the time the line had reached the front door. Of course, I had a great time on that first visit and its been a "must ride" for my wife and I ever since. Incidentally, the young girl I rode with that very first time ended up becoming my wife. |

I LOVED this ride as a kid. I guess I went through it maybe two or three times in the 1970's. My favorite were the ghost holograms that appeared with you
in the Doom Buggies in the mirror's reflection. Man, that was so cool.
In 1975, my favorite board game was Lakeside's Haunted Mansion Game. I've been trying to buy one on e-Bay for years now, but the bidding ALWAYS goes over $200 (especially if the game is in good condition) and I bow out. One of these days, I would love to have it sitting on my shelf. Cool DOOMBUGGIES! website, Dr. Acula. I think I may have to buy the book the site owner has written about the attraction. I'd love to check out the behind the scenes stuff the book promises!

Count me in as another 9 year old first (and only) timer. When we were on the ride, there was an electrical storm outside and some kind of power outage. We
ended up sitting in the Seance room for several minutes watching the disembodied head repeat her spiel over and over and over.

The first time I went to the Haunted Mansion, I rode in a buggy with my Mom & Aunt. So at the end, that hitchhiking ghost was sitting on me! The last time
I went was in the early 90's. I went with my Grandmother & my cousin in late winter/early spring when tourist traffic is slow. There was no wait to get
into the Haunted Mansion, so I just made loops. Go in, ride, come out, go right back in. The people that were working there were just like, 'You can just
stay on the ride'. So I did. I must have went through there about 20 times. And this would be Disney World in FL.

The rides are quite similar, though I think Disney World's has the edge thanks to some recent enhancements, particularly a bizarre room full of
stair-cases.
Mansion buffs would enjoy THE HAUNTED MANSION: FROM THE MAGIC KINGDOM TO THE MOVIES by Jason Sorrell. The book will apparently re-appear in a new edition soon.

Like Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion was not originally related to any particular Disney movie or mythology. In recent years, due to the films
based on the rides, there's been an attempt to create more of a tie-in (Nightmare Before Christmas theme at the Mansion, the addition of Jack Sparrow to
Pirates). I know it's all about attracting more and more customers but the things I love about both rides are that they come from another era, before
cross-promotion became so prevalent.

I'm a huge Disneyland nut. The Haunted Mansion is right behind Pirates of the Caribbean as the best ride ever created. Pirates was so much better before
all the "enhacements", but it is still the best. I can't stand that Johnny Depp is in the ride... The Mansion changes, I like however... The
updated Bride scene I think is very effective and I like it because it is an original idea. It is not taken from the movie. I'm so glad The Haunted Mansion
movie bombed because I would go crazy if they put Jennifer Tilly in the ride and an animatronic Eddie Murphy. Oh how I wish those Pirates movies had bombed...

THE HAUNTED MANSION and PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN are two of my all time faves. They seem the same no matter which Disney park I visit (and although I've
visited TDL at couple of times at Christmas post THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, the attraction was not changed to reflect it. I'd love to see that
version!). And both rides have such classic imagery, there is no point in ever updating! SPACE MOUNTAIN, though I love it... I can see being junked sometime
soon. It's all 2001 white and star field tunnels, but ghosts and spooky old mansions are here to stay for at least a bit longer, as are Pirate themed
scenes (No small thanks to the PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN movies!). It's nice to know even if it is another 5 years before I get to a Dinsey park, MANSION
and PIRATES will be waiting for me as always!

Haunted Mansion
Pirates and the TWA "Trip to the Moon"... great memories of going through those rides with my Dad, now sadly passed away.) I also consider myself lucky to have gone through the "classic" Disneyland, back in it's heyday... just a few months after the HM finally opened. To be 8 years old and in Disneyland... I wonder how Heaven will beat THAT?! LOL |

That's one of the reasons I was sooo disappointed by Disney when they had their "room full o' lawyers" crack down on "E Ticket"
magazine. All those folks who designed and built the original Disneyland are getting older every year and many have already passed away... Those magazines were
wonderful collections of the history behind the rides. Disney, Inc. pretty much opted to disrespect the past by allowing so much of it to fade into oblivion...

My first time out was actually at the Orlando Park when i was a child. I rode with my older sister and father, while my two younger sisters rode with my
mother. The rather plump ghost road along with us. I was amazed. I visited again only 3 years ago, and took the trip with my wife. It was wonderful.

I've done the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, Disney World and Disneyland Paris, where it's called The Phantom Manor. My favorite is the one in the
original Disneyland. I like the layout of the ride there. The Phantom Manor was interesting in that is was scarier, with skeletons and rotting corpses, but it
was frequently so dark you couldn't see anything.

Phantom Manor's also in need of a full-scale rehab as it's starting to look a little ropey and worn in places. I think it gets darker every year to
compensate for a lack of well-maintained sets and effects. By a cruel trick of fate, Disneyland Paris gets very little of the stringent upkeep the American
parks receive. Which is a real shame, because Phantom Manor is a worthy version of the Haunted Mansion and very creative and interesting in its own right. It
certainly has the greatest musical score ever lavished on a theme park attraction.
