Carradine Flub in "Mummy's Ghost"? |
Lead | |
|
OK! I tried to find a reference to this but was unable, so point me in the right direction if I'm wrong. I just watched "The Mummy's
Ghost" (for, approximately, the umpteenth time) and saw something that had previously escaped my notice. At 50:58, after Kharis brings Ananka back to the
tower, Yusef Bay (Carradine) is having his little conversation with temptation and says "I live. I live to fulfill my destiny as a Priest of Arkam."
However, his lips don't match up with "Arkam". The rest of this sequence looks fine and you wouldn't suspect it was looped but, clearly, he
says something other than "Arkam". I suspect it was done as a "wild line" but it's a short sequence. Seems it would have been easier to
do a retake! Anyone know anything/have any ideas about this? And if there are any lipreaders out there, I'd love to know what he
actually said! It's certainly far from the only time he mentions "Arkam"!

Carradine actually says "Poopypants."
He was such a kidder. Reggie LeBorg adored him. |

Wow, Ted! Amongst your many other talents, you're also a lipreader! Impressive! Hmmm. "Priest of Poopypants"! I like it. Conjures up some stark
imagery! Chaney probably could have found use for a "Priest of Poopypants" during that shoot!

Yeah, he's definitely saying something else. Looks like he's making a "p" sound in there somewhere but, no, not "poopypants". Seems
to be something like "fahpon". I can't think of any word close to that that makes sense.

Maybe he got THE MUMMY'S GHOST mixed up with his last film and said "Ramboona"

I'm still trying to figure out how the high priests of Karnak became the high priests of Arkam.
I've always noticed the dubbed line myself and never could figure out what he's really saying. Considering the out-of-control libidos displayed by these guys, maybe it's "fwapping."
Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way.

There's a story that the reason that Star Trek's "Mugato" got that name, was because De Kelly kept muffing the original "Gumato"
tag...

I watched the Mummy movies recently and wondered about how Karnak became Arkam myself.
Does anybody lip read? Anybody have a deaf person in their household? They might be able to assist with this mystery! |

nanosecond, there certainly is something else in there. Watching it, without sound, repeatedly, leads me to think that the word starts with a hard
"C" or a "K" sound and ends with a vowel (probably an "A"). In fact, if you imagine him saying "Karma", it seems to
work. I can't imagine, however, that actually is what he says! Unless, perhaps, this was the first scene they shot and Carradine
actually had a touch of Dyslexia! Hmmm? Naaah!

Wolfman Joe wrote: I really don't think so Wolfman Joe. His lips come together completely when forming the second part of whatever the word is. I'm no linguist but as an actor I have had some experience in this area and (I think - someone correct me if I'm wrong) the only letters that require that particular formation are "B", "P" and "M". I'm going with "M" or maybe "B"; just doesn't look like a "P" to me.

He's saying "High Priest of Shakespeare."

The 'Ar' definitely seems to be still audible on the soundtrack, followed by the mouthing of the bilabial consonant (b/m/p), and concluding with a slight narrowing (but not full closure) of the mouth to produce the velar 'k' (accompanied by a characteristic rising of the Adam's apple). Stick in a bit of high-falutin' jargon and it almost sounds plausible.

Much obliged, doctor velar 'k'.

Seriously, although Carradine may have thought of himself as a high priest of Shakespeare, what he's seemingly mouthing is "Priest of
Amun" (or Amon). (It's a sloppy loop with a miniscule part of the original word audible.) I don't have the original script to verify it, but
I'd make book on it. Not to mention it's logical, Amun being a major Egyptian deity.

doctor kiss wrote: Well, Doctor, taking into account the power of (your) suggestion and, frankly, being semi-likely to believe most any damn thing after watching this clip repeatedly (for what feels like days!), I think I'm willing to throw in with you! The transposition of those two letters is a likely mistake and it certainly lines up with what he appears to be saying! I just wish somebody had a copy of the shooting schedule. If we knew for a fact that this was the first day of shooting for Carradine and, therefore, the first time he said this word around someone who could correct him, that would certainly lend credence to this argument!
