I just saw it last night, and I stayed hoping there would be an additional Stark and Nick Fury cameo at the end, like the end of this short:http://youtube.com/watch?v=upvK_P7rF0w (shameless plug)
My Hulk is the Hulk from the TV series. Some of the comics are good, but I never cared for most of them because of how over the top they were. I loved how low-key the series was, and how even though Bixby's David Banner was on the run, he was a good man who still went out of his way to help people. To me, Ferrigno's Hulk was basically the Karloff Frankenstein Monster on steroids, which is what inspired the character in the first place. I loved the film's references to the series, and it was obviously alot more faithful than the '03 film. I loved the origin, the cameos, the music and the fact that he was called "David" at the end of the film. Was Norton a better Banner than Bixby? For me, no. Bill Bixby IS David Bruce Banner, just like Michael Keaton Is Batman, RDJ is Iron Man and Christopher Reeve is Superman; but Norton did a damn good job with what he was given. The CGI Hulk looked pretty dissapointing in his first two appearances, but looked pretty bad-ass by the time the climactic fight happened. I think with today's EFX a heavily made-up body-builder, CGI'ed up to look massive would have been SOOO much more believable. Overall a good film that I wish to see again; waaaaaay better than the Ang Lee film, but not as good as IRON MAN, which was a 4 star comic film all the way. |

Because I have no life, I just wasted the morning writing what is surely one of the longest 'net reviews of HULK '08 for my blog. Lots of
comics-continuity comparisons too. Check it out here.

"A number of reviewers have tagged 2008's THE INCREDIBLE HULK (henceforth HULK '08) as "average" or "by the numbers." This verdict bespeaks the inability of most critics to discern meaning in superhero films unless the film all but drives those meanings into the critic's skull with a balpeen hammer. HULK '08 is admittedly not a work of cinematic genius (whatever form that might take for the greatest of all possible Hulk movies). But for all of its flaws, it's far from average-" I thought it was average, at best (** of ****). It need not have been, had the filmmakers realized there was far more potential for this perceived "one trick pony" character, if he was endowed with more personality and articulate characterization (yep, such as in the comics). Actually, when you get right down to it, most superhero films are indeed "by the numbers".

I feel a little cheated with The Incredible Hulk. Why couldn't the Abomination look like he does in the comics, all reptilian with the big floppy Gorgo -
like ears? I'll take Gil Kane's version anyday over this aptly named generic looking abomination.

I thought Bill Bixby was superb in the TV series. Part of what made the show so terrifying to me as a kid was seeing a genuinely nice guy become a monster, and
as an adult, I'm better able to appreciate how Bixby's performance made the show so effective.

Well, this discussion potentially gets us into the question, "By what standard of excellence do you rate XYZ as average?" I dunno if you care about getting into those deep waters. I've tried discussing such things on other boards and some people really don't like to discuss their standards analytically-- maybe with some justification, if you believe that ultimately we all just like what we like and then find rationalizations. It's basically arbitrary and a matter of individual taste. I believe that we do bring a lot of ourselves into our personal reviews, and that's why one person's take may vary from another's. People like to think they're being objective with film critique, and while this is certainly a PART of it for us, in the long run we're bringing our own sets of standards and baggage along for the ride, and our critique is somewhat an extension of ourselves. It HAS to be, or otherwise there'd be no uniqueness or indiviudlaity to reviews, and there would only be "one correct standardized review" for every movie, by every individual. In the case of the Hulk film, I pretty much generalized what I thought several posts back after I'd seen it, and why it was only "average" to me. I'm not being difficult here; it's just that it's right there if you missed it, and no point in copying it again... As far as superhero films go, this one was average to me.
