AFI snubs Horror...again. |
Lead | |
|
Came in late on the latest AFI special, in which, instead of 100 films from a single genre, they had 10 lists from 10 genres- which managed to include such
relatively small categories as "Sports Films" and "Courtroom Dramas"...while studiously and blatantly ignoring "Horror" (although
I came in at the tail end of "Sci-Fi" and missed "Fantasy"- two genres in which they may have "hidden" an actual horror film, in
the hopes it might have gone unnoticed). After the notorious "Most Thrilling" list from a few years back- in which their refusal to clearly define
the word "Thrilling" allowed them to dodge the genre AND include inappropriate favourites like WIZARD OF OZ- it has become impossible to deny the
almost fanatical bias against our favourite genre.(Especially when films like SCARFACE were included- I'm certain even DePalma would rather have been
represented by something more "respectable"... you know, like CARRIE). By contrast, the producing of seperate lists for "Sci-Fi" and
"Fantasy" (which, twenty years ago would almost certainly have been lumped together) suggests that if you make enough money, they WILL start to take
you seriously... as good a philosophy as any in Hollywood...

For the animation, they included both SHREK and THE LION KING in the top 10, which to my mind disqualifies them from the offset.
And in the fantasy category, they included... HARVEY, which was an unexpected choice. The very next choice though was FIELD OF DREAMS, and they went from the soliloquy in Harvey... to the kid watching the same scene from Harvey on television in Field of Dreams, which made me wonder if Harvey's inclusion was solely to include that edit. I stopped watching after that. |

AFI TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES!!! | ||

And if AFI did include HORROR, what TOP 10 HORROR MOVIES would it be and which would be the TOP # 1. I don't know about the TOP 10 right now, but the
winner would obviously be the original FRANKENSTEIN (1931) with BORIS KARLOFF !!!

Does anyone really CARE what the AFI says? I don't. Ditto for the Oscars. What they name and what they don't isn't even a blip on my radar. They
speak for the masses anyway... and what do THEY know? WE know what WE like.

Agree totally. It's the US & People Magazine "Whats hot & What's not" syndrome. Forget it. It's a joke.

Yeah, it's tough to take the AFI seriously... but I'd love to start some kind of petition, if only to generate interest in the mainstream about the
best of the genre. (Actually, it might be best if we could get the AFI to PUBLICALLY STATE that they have an anti-horror bias- then they'd look like
hypocrites, and the door might be opened for someone more knowledgable to put together a more trustworthy "Top 100" type list).
