Tim, from the preview on your website I can already tell that this one's gonna be special. Can't wait to read the Hazel Court tribute!
Particularly striking cover, by the way!

I got mine, delivered through the miracle of the mail system in the coolest cardboard container ever! Mark me a happy subscriber!
The Hazel Court piece was really good, a heartfelt piece that reminded me of the writer's impression of Elizabeth Montgomery in the Bewitched companion, full of the personality & zest for life Hazel must have had. I think I'll have to track down Lady Snowblood now as well. The review of Muir's Horror Films of the 80's thankfully pointed out some of the same troubles I had with the book, though the review seemed to fall into exactly the same fate as Muir's work when he abruptly switched gears to praise for the last two paragraphs or so. |

The Hazel Court tribute was fantastic, and heartfelt, and sad. Made me really wish I had known her and her husband Don Taylor (who I have long been a fan of).

I second everything that was said about the excellent Hazel Court tribute. Also, Rebecca and Sam Umland's article about CED discs brought back some
near-buried memories of my own CED days, when it was a major achievement just to get a CED disc that didn't skip like crazy. Tim, do you have CED
equipment and software? (No special reason for asking, just curious.) The review of the SUSPENSE set helped me decide to special order it, finally.
Now, tonight, I'll read the Charlie Chan material. Can't wait! |

I should mention that the author of our much-praised Hazel Court tribute was David Del Valle -- who can also be heard on the commentary for THE FLY with David
Hedison.
No, I never had owned any CED discs or equipment. Read Video WatchBlog at www.videowatchdog.com!

Loved the Hazel Court article. I'm just disappointed her picture was not the main image on the cover.

Be that as it may, it was still a very attractive cover. One might even say striking.

I have to pipe in that I really enjoyed this special Kim Newman issue of VW (#140). And I thought MY eyes were starting to glaze over with video excess - how
does he cope!? By noting such things as the echoes of Robert McCammon's rather obscure novel "Usher's Passing" in THE HOUSE OF USHER or
Vampira's being more popularly known for a single day's work on an Ed Wood film rather than a well-deserved Emmy nomination, Mr. Newman has become one
of my favorite reviewers. Kudos, or a no-prize, or some such to the man! Of course, the non-Newman parts of this issue were pretty darn great, too...

I finally got my copy of #140 today. I think the post lady held it out of the mailbag for a while to read it for herself. Anyway, the Hazel Court article was
lovely, filled with charming anecdotes & interesting quotes. Congratulations & thanks go to David Del Valle for a wonderful reminiscence about his
longtime friendship with this wonderful lady.
I casually breezed through the rest of the contents of this issue & can only say that I look forward to an hour or two of fine reading later this evening. VWD is still my favorite genre mag - it's quite simply THE BEST! |

Y'know, I hope Tim's okay -- he hasn't posted anything on WATCHBLOG in almost a week, and he had that nasty flu thing a few weeks ago....

Another great issue and I, too, am amazed how Kim Newman has time to watch/write as much as he does.
In the letters column of this issue, Tim mentions how VW may need to play "catch up" and devote a column to some releases that got missed somehow. This column might be a good place for a wish list, keeping in mind that the Kennel is limited to releases provided to them for review. Anyway, here's my wish list: THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (By the Umlands, natch!) KILL BILL, VOL. 2 (We had vol. 1 reviewed, but never the last chapter) HIGH TENSION (An impressive horror debut that was never really covered). THE COFFIN JOE BOX SET (Marins has been reviewed, but only on tape as far as I know. This now defunct box set was a sight for sore eyes at Best Buys everywhere). THE WIZARD OF OZ, (I'm surprised Donna hasn't nudged Tim into reviewing this on DVD. The last review we had was the great THE ULTIMATE OZ set on laser disc). CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (Reviewed a loooong time ago on tape only). DOCTOR WHO SERIES 1 and 2 (Series 3 was just reviewed favorably, but the first two are worth a look, as well).
