I called his office and the guy answering the phones acted really strange. He said he was new and wasn't sure what he was allowed to say. He took my number
and said he'd have someone else call me back. It sounded like even the people at the studio weren't sure what was happening, but since they didn't
immediately say it was just a rumor and that Winston was not dead, it doesn't sound good.

Perhaps for the sake of his company and its current projects things have been kept quiet. I assume they want to put out an official release so until then...

Wow. I was just browsing through and saw the subject about 30 minutes ago. Kept refreshing the site for any updates and now it's official. Very sad.

Stan's Wikipedia entry was just updated, although his passing not been noted on the recent deaths page. It says he succumbed to cancer. My best wishes and
consolations to Stan's family; no one should lose their dad on Father's Day. I think this quote by Winston (from his IMDB bio) best exemplifies how he
would like to be remembered:
"There's nothing more important to me in my life than my family, and nothing will ever take over. I believe that's why the work shows as well as it is because my work is not a sacrifice. My work is a joy. I'm not sacrificing my family for my work. I go in and I love what I do. I love nothing more than my family, and now grand kids. Wow, hard to believe because I'm like 36 years old!"

Sorry to hear about this, and surprised to learn he was younger than I am. Stan was a very talented man and a very sharp businessman,
the latter of which is really what brought him his fame. He never claimed to be a great makeup artist or that he alone had created the creatures that emerged
from his studios. But he knew how to develop and market the talents of others, and how to promote his studios. I met with him many times over the years, at
his studio, on movie sets and occasionally socially. He was amusing and genial, but also guarded and protective of his studios' creations.

This is most definitely a sad day. I've always admired (and have been inspired by) Winston's work on The Terminator series, Aliens, Predator,
Pumpkinhead, Edward Scissorhands, and the Monster Squad. The work he did on Jurassic Park was groundbreaking, but never spoke to me like what he did on the
other films.
Well, Stan went out on a high note with the success of the work he did on Iron Man. His studio's make-up designs and practical effects always kept the films he worked on grounded in reality. One of the things I marveled at when I originally saw it, was the work he did for the Gill Man in The Monster Squad. There was a translucent quality to the skin texture which sold me that it was more than a man in a suit. He really made his monsters and creatures quite believable, and I thank him for that. It's been said before for others, 62 is too young to go.

From The Los Angeles Times:
Stan Winston, dead at 62; Oscar-winning visual effects artist suffered from multiple myeloma 11:57 AM PT, Jun 16 2008 Stan_winston Stan Winston, an Oscar-winning visual effects artist, has died at age 62. Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a rep from Stan Winston Studio. "Stan died peacefully at home surrounded by family," a spokeswoman said. Winston won three visual effects Oscars and earned multiple nominations. His first Oscar was for James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986). Winston later won for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1992) and 1993's "Jurassic Park." In lieu of flowers, Winston's family is requesting that donations be made to his charities of choice, a list of which will be posted here shortly. -- Sheigh Crabtree |

Andrew, thanks for that wonderful quote. It is SO great, and too rare, when a person with so much talent also turns to have his head on so straight.
Rest, Stan. Many thanks. -Craig W. |

This is a real shock.
I think my first exposure to Stan Winston's work was seeing (and loving) GARGOYLES on TV in the early 70's. From there, the list is endless. I have many DVDs with Stan Winston featurettes on them and they are always my favorite extras. The Jurassic Park DVDs (for instance) are a treasure trove for Stan fans like myself. RIP to one of the greats, Stan Winston. I may have to watch Gargoyles tonight... |

What sad news. My friend Ray Markham worked on one of Stan's first credited jobs on TVs Gargoyles 1972.

Another amazing talent goes off to that motion picture studio in the sky..Stan Winston's work is on a parallel with Jack Pierce. He was responsible for
some truly iconic images in the movies of the last 30 odd years..R.I.P. Stan , you've left quite a legacy!

Think we should change the masthead to aknowledge Winston's passing? His work may have been contemporary, but he kept the horror tradition alive, and
probably helped make a lot of younger viewers more interested in some of the monster movies of the past.

Sad,sad, news. Stan Winston is a legend in the makeup effects business. From GARGOYLES,
to THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN to his contributions on THE THING. Then the big budget work he did. Gads, and so young. I didn't realize he was that sick. A close friend of mine used to rent a house in Miami from Stan Winston's nephew, and he would always hear stories of what Winston was working on. Yes, a masthead change is definitely in order, imho. Man..."Sigh"
