What the hell? Some guy is claiming Stranglers is Cut at Beaver? Mike, went back on that one what a dozen or so times. I'll go with Mike, before this guy.

These may be the strongest Hammer transfers on the market today - certainly neck-and-neck with the best in the Universal set. This bodes incredibly well for
the upcoming 'Horror' collection...

Tongs is cut for sure and quite badly in one scene - see my posting on the Hammer board on this site as to what is missing. The Sony print seems to be the cut
BBFC X certificate theatrical release.
Stranglers is also cut - DVD Beaver is correct. The print is missing at least two shots of Marie Devereaux observing strangulations which can be found in the World of Hammer episode Costumers and an extract from one of them can be found in the trailer included on the disk. There is probably other stuff missing as well (the scene in which Guy Rolfe is beaten-up int he alleyway looks cut too). From Mike's earlier postings he only seemed to check out the snake/mongoose fight which was cut from the UK video release in the mid 1990's. These cuts seem to affect all versions of the film. |

I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's not always a good idea to try and work out what is or isn't cut based on promotional material like trailers and such. It's common for trailers to feature shots that never made it into the final release prints. |

At a pal's house yesterday, we watched PIRATES OF BLOOD RIVER, which was obviously low-budget (a pirate movie entirely set in a jungle!) but which I
enjoyed more than I thought I would.
It's weird ... if you keep Gothic monsters and Tortoise Fisher out of the equation, sometimes I find myself enjoying Hammer movies quite a bit. |

I always figured that a long time ago, trailers would partially be made from alternate takes and cut footage, instead of printing up scenes just for a trailer.
At least, decades ago and with low(er) budget films. Plus, trailers can be made well before the film is in its final cut too. Am I wrong about this impression?

It still happens, what with teasers, pre-release trailers, post-release trailers, dvd promo trailers, etc. all being a part of the equation. Then there are red
vs. green trailers, and MPAA rated trailers, where for example Johnny Storm can't be seen "Flaming On" as he does in the film itself, or Indiana
Jones has guns digitally erased from pointing in his direction, and so on.
Remember the back to back beach duel between James Bond and that Man With the Golden Gun, Chris Lee? You won't if you didn't see the trailer. |

All four were mastered right from the camera negatives. I did notice that jump cut in TONGS, but assumed it was a censor
cut. As for the Devereaux shots in STRANGLERS, most of the claims to their existence seem to come from reviews at the time. It is entirely likely that it was
screened for critics before censors demanded those shots be taken out. In any event, Grover Crisp always strives (with my urging, of course) to use
the longest versions extant, and if something's missing, it may not exist anymore except perhaps in private hands.

I want to add to this list my appreciation to Mike and Sony for all the hard work that went into this set. I also heard from Laser Blazers that the set is
selling very well.
