I really enjoy the bulk of Rick's work. And I very much appreciate the opportunity to see his work in progress and converse with a person of his
professional credentials. That said, I have no problem whatsoever with someone posting a negative opinion of his work (or mine - and I highly doubt Rick does
either), but using language like that is simply lazy and rude. We can't all be Roger Ebert in expressing our opinions, but comments such as that one serve
no purpose but to offend. I think an explanation is the least that's in order. And that's MY opinion.

Rick,
I think it looks very cool and fun; but I was wondering....Is it hellaciously time consuming to adjust some of the movements of, say Bela's arm ? What I'm thinking is, if you could kind of double time the busier right arm/wrist movement it would just about lock it right up with the funk guitar figure. Probably not a big deal or really noticeable to non-musicians but if it were an easy fix.... Maybe something that could be tweaked on say, a long plane flight back to the UK for, oh, something or other going on there ?

Well, I'm impressed. I've often wondered how long it will be until technology allows us to make our own movies. Not to say that day is here yet for the
average guy, but this is sure progress. One question: if Rick's images are spot on, then what are the limits of the useage of these images in terms of
licensing from certain carefully guarded estates?
Oh, by the way, if you don't appreciate something that is offered for free, feel free to not comment. Silence can be more effective than crude commentary. |

Nightmarekey. You could have expressed yourself while maintaining a small measure of dignity. Criticism is one thing but to stoop to such a crude expression on
these boards reflects something beyond the criticism.
We have an honored talent sharing some work here that doesn't make him a dollar. It's pure Monster Kid fun. That's all. He won't make a buck off it. It won't go on show at the Museum of Modern Art. It's just Rick Baker reaching into that place that causes one to create. Tapping into that oft-times illusive inspiration that makes learning new tools, techniques and methods a challenge for an artist so he can build and create something completely unlike anything he has done before. And out of all the places and the people he could have shared this with, he did so here. That says something about our members and the board itself. I think Rick is immune to critics of a certain low manner. An artist of his stature (is there anyone better?) ultimately has to satisfy himself but then he also has to contend with the movie business and with people who have no talent and only the power of their control of a project to cling to in regards to their own respect. So I don't believe there is any great effect here in using a crude expression with Rick that he can't shrug off. I think of Nick Fury's retort in the scene from the classic Fantastic Four comic book (Sue and Reed's wedding) as he throws out Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as they attempt to crash the wedding: "You can't scare me. I've been threatened by experts." But buddy, I think your greatest misstep with that raw oafish post was angering Count Gamula along with many others here. I don't think there is a sweeter guy on the planet who everyone in horror fandom loves and appreciates for his untiring devotion to the classic horror monsters and films. This page you post on here is because of his unselfish efforts. So while it's encouraged to criticize on these boards, please be aware that your words and how you express yourself marks you as well.

However, I can't help feeling that the "sh-t" comment was designed solely to be offensive and insulting ( regardless who it was being aimed at ). I would have much preferred to have heard Nightmarekey's reasons for not liking it. I hope that NMK will have the good manners to apologize for his off-color remark and offer a little more constructive criticism instead. I'm absolutely certain that Rick Baker can take an insensitive remark with a great deal of aplomb... however, like the rest of us, he also deserves to be treated with common courtesy. - GJS |

Lets not be too harsh with our comments to nightmarekey. I don't think he meant to be disrespectful to anyone. He used a word that I don't think was
appropriate, but he is entitled to his opinion. Lets wait and see if he replies and tells us why he feels Mr. Baker's work was not something that he
enjoyed. Sometimes we say or write things that we later regret. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt, and lets not go down the road of making any remarks
ourselves that might offend anyone else. I would hate for Mr. Baker to see us bickering amongst ourselves. Lets all play nice.

Crow T Robot wrote: Point taken, Crow. However, it certainly should be noted that saying "piece of shit" and following it with "No offense" is utterly pointless and nonsensical beyond belief! If one's intent is not to offend, then one should not express one's self with offensive terms. Conversely, if the point is, indeed, to offend...then own it!

After posting my reply I wondered if the boy might not have been drunk when he wrote his post. We need to remember that we are posting at home and at our
leisure and this cyberworld is available to us twenty-four hours a day. So, regardless of our state of mind or level or sobriety we can log online and say
whatever we want.
I suggest that a breathalizer test be installed on all computers to prevent boorish and tactless behavior. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Rick---when do we get to see The Mummy? Or Mummies? How about a chorus line of Imhotep and both Kharis Mummies? That would be sweet. And let's not forget the backup singers. The Brides of Dracula? |

Mine doesn't sing or dance, but in the spirit of the Monster Mash I thought I'd add this piece (of pop-culture sh-t). It's a photoshop graphic I
did a few years ago for my review of rock guitarist Zip Caplan's CD, Monsters and Heroes.

FRANKLY, my dear, I think it's a piece of pop-culture...That does seem a bit harsh. Everything we discuss here is pop-culture, of one form or another. There may be good or bad pop-culture (and a number of us love even the very bad), but it's all pop-culture.

Count, what a wonderful touch of whimsy---for pop culture art, that is.
The more I think about it the more laughable it is that anybody would refer to anything on this Board as pop culture $#!%. Monster movies are, by their very nature, pop culture. Remember when the Marvel Comics logo used to contain the words "Pop Art?" |

Hi Guys, Well at least I got some new people responding to this thread.
Kerry I like your band image but everyone knows that the Wolf Man is a drummer not a guitarist. Well at least in my monster band he is. I was hoping to be able to get all of the monsters in the band before I had to go back to work but, duty calls I have to go back to work now. At least I got the Wolf Man to jam with Drac. He is a little stiff on the drums but keeps good time. This is still very much a work in progress .I am hoping to finesse all of this a great deal for the finished version of my pop culture shit. Such language I have never heard such words before. I figured not everyone was going to like this but I am having lots of fun doing it and thats what counts. I am uploading the latest installment now will put it up when it finishes. |

Have you ever seen the guitarist for Metallica (Kirk Hammett) ? ,He has a guitar that has the picture of Boris Karloff as the Mummy on the front.
I bid you Welcome!!!

That is some wicked sh- ......... it goes without saying!
Wolf Man's physique (to paraphrase Warren Zevon) is perfect. Reminds me of my old pal Rikki Rockett with that stylin' do. I see that Drac's been tweaked a bit too -- he wants to open his mouth and start howlin' with the Children of the Night. And that laser light show -- the Dr. Strange tv movie shoulda looked so good! If having lots of fun is what counts, then count me in! |
