I'm eagerly looking forward to comparing the Disney version with Hammer's NIGHT CREATURES.

May be a silly question but -- is the movie actually any good? I vaguely remember seeing it on THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY eleventy-gillion years ago, but
don't really remember much about it.

Yes, I'd like to know this too. What do the Dr Syn fans think? How does the Disney version compare to the Hammer one? |

Patrick McGoohan plays a strong Dr. Syn and is spooky and malevolent as the Scarecrow. The film has all of the usual Disney polish of the time and an
infectious theme song to boot. That being said, some may prefer Hammer's Night Creatures because of it's more adult treatment of the same story.

The Disney film is based on the later book Christopher Syn, which carries the byline of William Buchanan and Russell Thorndike, although I've
heard the use of Syn creator Thorndike's name was a courtesy credit. The film tones down elements found in the novel, but it does give the Scarecrow a
decent amount of onscreen time. The Hammer production is based on the earlier film DR. SYN which, in turn, is based on material in the original novels,
neither of which give us a lot of the Scarecrow, proper. (But both of those are still good films.) There's lots to like in each of the character's
incarnations. Wish they'd do more with the tales...especially given how hot Hollywood is for remakes.

I remember catching one of the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh episodes on a Sunday, after church. I was completely enthralled by the music (that theme song is
fantastic), McGoohan, the different Riders of the Marsh costumes...just terrific stuff.
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, the soldiers of the king feared his name... Scarecrow, Scarecrow, the countryfolk all loved him just the same... Scarecrow... On the southern coast of England, there's a legend people tell of days long ago when the great Scarecrow would ride from the jaws of hell and laugh (ahahahahahaha!) with a fiendish yell...

Never saw the George Arliss (first Pres. of the Episcopal Actor's Guild, to which the wife & I belong) version - any opinions?
Great weekend, -Craig W. |

The George Arliss version is very good. I got it on a triple feature from Reel Values. It's available from Creepy Classics. Arliss is great as
are most of the rest of the cast. The kid is a pain but he's only on for short periods. And, you get a happy
ending. Highly recommended.

If anyone recalls, during the scene in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen when the team is coming together for the first time, there's a painting on the
wall showing one of the leagues of the past, and the McGoohan Scarecrow is among them. Always liked that little nod.

Thanks, PJ. I've seen some of George's work in the last few years, and - amazingly, for his Victorian Stage roots - he underplays very nicely on
camera.
(Alas, word is he was VERY full of himself, as an actor; but waddayagonnado?) Best, -Craig W. |
