There are 7 possible sets left with the official Columbia shorts.
1940 to 1942 YOU NATZY SPY! to SOCK-A-BYE BABY 23 shorts 1943 to 1945 THEY STOOGE TO CONGA to MICRO-PHONIES 21 shorts 1946 to 1948 BEER BARREL POLECATS to CRIME ON THEIR HANDS 25 shorts 1949 to 1951 THE GHOST TALKS to PEST MAN WINS 24 shorts 1952 to 1954 A MISSED FORTUNE to SCOTCHED IN SCOTLAND 22 shorts 1955 to 1956 FLING IN THE RING to COMMOTION ON THE OCEAN 16 shorts 1957 to 1959 HOOFS AND GOOFS to SLAPPY BULL FIGHTERS 16 shorts. Of course, the last two could be combined for total of 32 shorts. And there are the SNAPSHOTS and feature films from the 40s/50s. |

I think Sony would be wise to combine the last two. I'm eager for the Shemp and Joe shorts and I hope they don't get scared and quit if sales start to
taper off a bit because a majority aren't buying the non-Curly sets.

It will be unfortunate if they stick to the one set per year schedule. I wish they would release two sets a year like some studios do with their TV show sets.

Great news!!! The Three Stooges Collection, Vol. 3 has been announced with an August 26th release date. This set from **Sony** will continue the chronological format with great shorts like You Nazty Spy!, A Plumbing We Will Go, An Ache in Every Stake, Some More of Somoa, Matri-Phony and Three Smart Saps to name a few. It will retail for $24.96, but is available at Classicflix.com for only $19.99. This release may be a good sign of things to come with seven months between volumes 1 (Oct 2007) and 2 (May 2008), and only three months between this release and volume 2. The shorts included should be: 1940

That's good news, and I hope this is some sign Sony is committing to releasing all 190 shorts (Shemp by the end of the year? Eep-eep-eep-eep!).
I'm worried though that there's some threshold saleswise where they'd stop doing 'em. After this next batch the 1943-1946 batch is problematic. (Curly's decline is painful to watch, though perhaps most buyers won't notice or care.) I love the early Shemp shorts but one expects sales to drop markedly, and more so with the Besser ones, though because it's been 25 (or more) years since I've seen those, in a way they're the ones I most want to see again. |

They could probably raise the profiles of the later Shemp/Joe Besser releases by adding some of the Stooges feature films and other extras (documentaries,
home-movie footage, interviews, etc.), TV appearances, the "Curly Shuffle" music video, etc. There's certainly plenty of material out there.
The fact that they've decided to move so fast on Vol. 3 is a good sign of (1) a certain amount of commitment on their part, and (b) the strength of customer response. Never underestimate the power of the Stooges fan base ... :-) For those of you who have Vol. 2, I'm sure you've seen the promo for the Harryhausen films. Whether you like the "colorized" Harryhausen films or not, it's still a pretty cool and clever promo for the new DVD editions of 20 Million Miles to Earth, Earth Versus the Flying Saucers and It Came from Beneath the Sea. "Shemping" is a lot easier to say than "Benadareting"
They ought to issue all the post-stroke Curly shorts (there's 12) on one DVD and start the classic Shemps on another one, or at least on another disc. As for the Joe Besser ones, they should forget all those and put all his appearances as Stinky on The Abbott and Costello Show instead.
