I still remember reading Alex Cox's ideas for an American Godzilla movie and thought they were really neat. He was quite passionate about the character. Still not quite sure what it's take on the subject (Godzilla? Kaiju in general?) is, nor what the title refers to. ...Happy Enterprises Productions...

(06/08/08 8:27 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I've seen a near-final cut of the documentary and anticipate fans of the genre will be extremely pleased. It takes a genuinely fresh, unexpected approach to the material. Instead of opting for a generic genre overview, as was the case with the mostly excellent BBC documentary from 1998 (?), GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS, the heart of this show is the unsung behind-the-scenes talent, and the impact the genre had on people's lives and careers. I was impressed by the way it digs into the nuts-and-bolts of creating special miniature and optical effects through interviews with people like Yasuyuki Inoue, whose major contributions to the look of those classic films have, up to now, been virtually unknown outside Japan. I've seen a lot of Japanese-made documentaries about this stuff; typically uncritical shows produced by Toho themselves or glossy personality-driven pieces by NHK (Japan's public television network) or as innocuous segments on Japan's myriad variety shows. BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE has the advantage of being made by informed outsiders. The interview subjects say and express things they probably wouldn't if it were made by fellow Japanese. As such it's honest and detailed in a way I've never seen before. It's actually quite touching here and there. I won't give anything away, but one segment in particular leaves the viewer with an appreciation and understanding of what it was like being on the spfx stage 40-50 years ago, the excitement of creating something spectacular from nothing.

It has a lot of heart; the sequence with the three Godzilla actors (or inhabitors) is outstanding; I've never seen its like anywhere else, and the audience at the Egyptian loved it. I understand this is going to turn up on a DVD, but I hope it also gets grabbed by a cable channel.
