It was trying to come up with recurring vampire hunters, monster hunters, or occult detectives in films or TV, excluding characters created as opponents of main characters. So Van Helsing in the Hammer and to a lesser degree the Universal Dracula films does not count, but Blade and Buffy do.

There are of course plenty of occult detectives, monster hunters, vampire hunters, etc. who are not opponents of main characters who appear in prose and comic books, but in films this has not been the case.

Feel free to include films where the monster hunter or vampire hunter is the main character, even if no sequel has or will follow (e.g. Constantine or Captain Kronos).

Kerwin Matthews as Dr. Barnaby Cross in the failed pilot GHOSTBREAKERS (1967). Dennis Dugan and Trevor Eve in the short lived series SHADOW CHASERS (1985). Martin Landau did a pilot called THE GHOST OF SIERRA DE COBRE (aka THE HAUNTED) where he played (if I remember correctly) a shrink who unhaunts haunted houses. It was written by Joseph Stefano.

As unsold pilots are allowed for consideration here, I note these:

BAFFLED (1972). Susan Hampshire is a rare book dealer with an interest in the paranormal. Leonard Nimoy is a race car driver with psychic powers. Together, they fight crime! Actually, this may not qualify for the category. If the series had followed the tone of the pilot, it would have been a detective rather than a horror show, with the dynamic duo using information from Nimoy's visions to solve or prevent crimes.

THE INCREDIBLE ROBERT BALDICK (1972). British pilot written by Daleks creator Terry Nation, with Robert Hardy as a psychic investigator in the Victorian era. Apparently, he had his own private train, which makes me think THE WILD, WILD WEST was an influence.

THE POSSESSED (1977). James Farentino is, for all practical purposes, the Phantom Stranger--a mysterious individual with undefined abilities, who shows up just as weird things start happening. Actually, he is given an origin--he was a defrocked priest who, after nearly dying in a crash while driving drunk, is given a second chance by God--but this is so quickly and cheaply done that it feels like a last minute add-on.

THE WORLD OF DARKNESS (1977)/THE WORLD BEYOND (1978). A pair of pilots featuring Granville van Dusen as one Paul Taylor, apparently another paranormal investigator. I remember seeing these advertised, but for whatever reason did not watch them, so I can supply no further details.

VAMPIRE (1979). Richard Lynch, obviously inspired by Frank Langella, is a vampire thwarted by writer (?) Jason Miller and ex-cop E.G. Marshall. I presume that the plan was for Miller and Marshall to continue in the series, rather than have Lynch face new foes.*

THE OMEN (1995). A rather peculiar pilot that pretended to be based on the movies about the Anti-Christ, but was actually about some ancient mist that hopped from body to body, possessing each in turn and making it do naughty things. Brett Cullen, William Sadler, and Steven Williams were the guys on its trail.

*It occurs to me that this might be disqualified on the grounds by which Van Helsing is disqualified. However, my recollection of the film is that it spends a lot more time on Miller and Marshall than on Lynch--and certainly, at the time M & M were the bigger names. Still, it is called VAMPIRE. So, you can rule either way.

I don't know much about this failed pilot. Is there any connection with Matthews' similar character, Jonathan Fletcher, in the first Dan Curtis Dead of Night: A Darkness at Blaisdon? That was apparently an attempt at a series featuring a supernatural investigator.

I've never heard that this was intended as a pilot (doesn't mean it wasn't; the final comment by E.G. Marshall gives enough room for more, and Steve Bochco was co-author of the screenplay). Can you point me to someone/something that says this?

[EDIT: in looking up the Carnacki Ghost Finder teleplay information, I found that it was one of a BBC series of plays that aired between 1971 and 1973 under the title: The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes (which may or may not be of interest to members of this board.

also, while looking up information on the same title in imdb I ran across yet another series called the BBC2 Playhouse, in which Donald Pleasance played a character named George Livingston, described as a psychic investigator/debunker in a six-part 1976 episode entitled The Mind Beyond: Meriel, the Ghost Girl, produced by Irene Shubik, the guiding light behind the acclaimed series Out of the Unknown. Appears to be the only appearance of this Livingston character, although Pleasance starred in two other earlier (1974) episodes based on stories by Isaac Bashevis Singer. END EDIT]

I do not have a copy on hand to verify, but I recall seeing it listed in Lee Goldberg's book UNSOLD TELEVISION PILOTS.
