Yep, I emailed the sales address to say just that, but curiously, that address is now bouncing mails as undeliverable.

Amazon just shipped The Skull, Houdini, and Student Bodies to me today. The Possession of Joel Delany and Jekyll & Hyde Together Again have been delayed.

The only BB exclusives will be the second wave of films in July. The first wave -- the June 3rd'ers -- are for everyone to enjoy.

For what it's worth, Netflix tells me they shipped The Man Who Could Cheat Death and The Deadly Bees to me today. So that's one way to get a hold of the Best Buy exclusives, especially if you're looking to
rent and not buy.

I have received shipping notices on Possession of Joel Delaney, The One and Only and Jekyll & Hyde Together again from DeepDiscount. Movies Unlimited has
shipped out Those Daring Young Men In Their Jaunty Jalopies, The Optimists, Houdini and the Skull. Rhubarb and The Busy Body are set to ship on July 1st. I
have preordered at Amazon The Pied Piper , Won Ton Ton the Dog Who Saved Hollywood and Money From Home for $9.99 each so shipping was free. I noticed they have
already upped the price on those to 12.99 each. They are set for July 1 release also.

I've got JOEL DELANEY on the way from Netflix. This is one I wasn't willing to drop the cash on without seeing it first. If I had known about MAN WHO
being on Netflix I would've added it sooner. I'll purchase the dvd of it when it comes out, but I'm an inpatient so-and-so and want to see it NOW!
N'yah. EDIT: Joel Delaney showed up at my door, and I took a cruise thru it just now. Transfer looks similar to THE SKULL, in that there's grain, and it doesn't look over-manipulated. Looks like a film from the early 70s. Ben

Livius1 wrote: Indeed. Got a look at JOEL. Can't fault the transfer one bit, but it's a singularly unattractively-lensed and completed film. Lots of grain level fluctuation from one shot to the next, and some radically shifting color values leading in and out of dissolves. The sound sometimes seems unfinished as well, with at least two instances where room tone changes dramatically. What about the moooovie?! It's an interesting but ultimately silly relic of white liberal guilt curdling into unresolved xenophobia - it's trying so hard to skewer and dismantle the McClaine character's whole way of life, but still needs its inescapable lower-class, ethnic characters to remain a secretive enclave of dubious motivation, with their collective fingers on the pulse of 'true power' or whatever. For a more successful example of filmmakers dealing with their push-pull fear, loathing, and attraction to a city's subculture, try Friedkin's CRUISING. It resolves nothing either, but seems to me more honest in its ambivalence toward what it's attempting to deal with.

I read JOEL DELANEY is interlaced as well. Hmph.

I like JOEL DELANEY, sure it's dated and plays on the very fears and misconceptions it shames, but CRUISING is pretty dated too (I'm surprised Friedkin
didn't pull out a gerbil).
I still find DELANEY gives a pretty solid dose of the creeps, and I like King as a pretty-boy psycho. I also think it has some pretty tense moments (none of which I'll reveal), and for me the ending is still cool - even though in retrospect it's quite the norm for it's day. I also do have the bonus of having been quite unnerved by it as a kid. I recommend a triple feature 70's psycho-social Hoo-haa , POSSESSION OF JOEL DELANEY, CRUISING, and for a chaser LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR.
I have the R-2 that came out a year ago I'll peek to see if it's the same transfer. It's always looked pretty gritty-70's to me, so I'm sure that could just be the nature of the beast. |

dhtreptow wrote:Oh, CRUISING's dated, all right - and hysterical about its subject as well. But I still get the sense that Friedkin is purposefully exploring his ambivalence toward what his film's investigating, rather than being simply at the mercy of those conflicting impulses - as I believe JOEL is.
