I don't know about the other DVDs but the Silent Serial Collection is a great 2 disc set. And under $20!

First of all, my post wasn't a criticism toward "restoration" of old movies, of course. I only contested SOME of your initiatives.
Quote: "straight black and white, however, looks awful on BABES IN TOYLAND which screams for color" This is ridiculous. BABES IN TOYLAND was "intended for color", - and so what ?. This kind of pitiful argument has been heard countless times, from the pro-colorization gang of idiots, and for a lot of movies. The problem is that it was made in b&w, and colorization is not color. And incidentally, I have seen "Babes in Toyland" COUNTLESS times in movie theaters in Paris (it was even re-released nationally in the late 1970's or early 1980's) - and its black-&-white photography is quite beautiful. And incidentally, if you look at the Laurel & Hardy forums, you'll see that most of Stan & Babe's fans rejected the old edition of BABES on DVD as it included only the colorized version, and bought the most recent edition JUST BECAUSE it contains the original b&w version. And most of them think that Universal, in Region 2, made a mistake in including the colorized versions (totally awful) of the shorts as an "addition" - apparently nobody, or almost, appreciated the "gift". Quote: " That colorization, then, is actually more true to the "original intent" than the first black and white release, and it's the only version I'm interested in watching on television. The colors suit the subject matter and make the car look good and drive well too. The BABES IN TOYLAND DVD is not the original film, intended to be shown on a big screen. It's a DVD, intended to be watched on a pitifully small TV screen in a living room. The color works for that sort of presentation. And just because a DVD is presented in color, that does not preclude showings of the original film in black and white anyplace or time anyone wants to show it. And that is that. " Colorization is made by idiots for other idiots. No further "argument" is necessary.
And - incidentally - most of people don't watch DVDs on "pitifully small TV screen" excepted perhaps in the Third World. Not only the current TV screens are of respectable size, but a DVD is also intended to be shown in "home theaters".

Wait, why the hell would you colorize something that was black and white? It's boring sounds like some half assed argument that gets blamed on my
generation (which is quite annoying as its not the case)
Thats like finding an old serial on firemen and deciding its needs new music like lol Man I'm happy I read this as I was about to drop some money on Serial Squadron DVDs. Thanks for the warning gents!

In my book SS is doing a great job. Last I looked, nobody else is bothering to release these incomplete serials, fix up the more familiar ones and the prices
are VERY fair.
It may not be to everyone's liking but try to find this material elsewhere. If not for SS "sol". {sorry out of luck}

So, gfanikf, you are basically going to base your entire opinion on something you haven't seen for yourself on the comments of people who have an agenda
against the Serial Squadron? Furthermore, your going to base said opinion on ALL Serial Squadron titles because of the comments of these people with an agenda?
And anyone who has anything positive to say is automatically ignored, right?
I just want to make sure we're on the same page here.

I have several Serial Squadron editions, enjoy them all, and am eagerly awaiting the finished Masked Rider. Do I always agree with Dr. Grood? Nope. Do I
appreciate his enthusiasm and efforts? Yep. The Serial Squadron has a website and forum, and with those at hand one can research what each title offers and how
it's presented.

titles that were not edited, that the Serial Squadron has released?
If you want I'll gladly review any of your stuff on my website fairly if you would like and give it a fair and honest examination. However, the fact
that they are reported to have been altered, not as a result of condition or remaining elements, but because of someones personal taste, bothers me.

I believe Dr. Grood gave a fairly good overview of Squadron releases in post #5 of this thread. |

The only true "edited" title the Squadron has is MALA, SECRET AGENT OF THE SOUTH SEAS. Everything else is complete and uncut on Squadron releases. A
couple of titles have tinting, which can be defeated by simply turning the color off of your TV if that really bothers you. There are, of course, those who
have an agenda and will plaster hysterical proclamations of "WARNING!! WARNING!!" over every Squadron release out there, whether they've seen it
or not. Amusingly enough, these same people have no such proclamations on the tinted sequences of VCI's CAPTAIN VIDEO (which are not only NOT original, but
incorrectly done to boot!) or the blasted VCI logo that adorns the same serial and RIDERS OF DEATH VALLEY. They also fail to warn people off about things like
Madacy's release of SHADOW OF THE EAGLE, which is run together without chapter endings, or AC COMICS release of THE SECRET CODE, which eliminates the Code
breaking lessons at the end of the chapters.

I appreciate the information.
Look I have no sympathy for AC Comics and there damn 25 dollars for a VHS transfer garbage or PD places, there is no expectation of quality with PD companies and I have not seen any VCI release. I Doc Satan drop me an email at gfanikf@yahoo.com or a pm if you interested in having us review your product (we get anywhere from 100-600 hits a day) or doing an interview with the site to talk about the SS and address some of these issues or both. I'm sure our readers and readers here would love it. Oh Doc you live in Newton or was the festival only there? I lived in Bala Cynwyd (and my parents still do) and my fiancees live in Broomall so I'm familiar with the area. How is that for a legit olive branch?

Actually, I don't work for the Serial Squadron, so those aren't my products. I just don't dig the idea of people passing judgment on the basis of
those who have an agenda. But I will gladly accept the olive branch as I'm not looking for a fight, just justice for someone who deserves it.
Incidentally, I'm actually a Philly man. I went to the fest--which was held in Newtown and which, by the way, is what this thread was really supposed to be about until it was hijacked--and it was quite a treat. DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST was all it was cracked up to be, the newer stuff ranged from pretty good (THE SCARLET AVENGER and THE DANGERS OF DEBORAH) to at least interesting (THIRTY SECOND DOOM). A good time was had by all. If you're in the area, you should come to next year's fest. It really is one long party.

It's hilarious to me that people are still believing crap like that espoused by a poster in this thread. I haven't seen ANYBODY issue a "WARNING!!
WARNING!!" over "every Squadron release", only those that are edited, have added color or sound effects, new credits added, etc., and then
billed as "restored." In my case, nobody has been more critical of such releases than me, and nobody has been quicker than me to praise Squadron
product that deserves praise. I have criticized VCI for releases from RED RYDER (not a good print) to the ones marred by logos, I don't buy Madacy discs
(they all suck, so far as I've seen) and I gave a HUGE "beware this one" review to AC Comics' THE SECRET CODE. The poster above simply has no
idea what the hell he's talking about if he's talking about me, and since he's sprouting the same crap Grood sprouts, I can only assume he is. If
he's not, he should be tell us who he IS talking about. And he should also go to www.inthebalcony.com and read
REAL serial reviews and not Grood sales PR.

Do we have a guilty conscience, Senor Laughing Gravy?
Actually, I was more referring to your buddy Serial Murmerer, who maintains a so-called Complete List of All Known Theatrical Serials On DVD on a couple of websites. The list is missing many titles and most of the Squadron titles have a hysterical "WARNING! WARNING!" placed all over them while stuff from VCI, AC Comics, etc. does not have the same. For instance, I don't see a "WARNING! THE COLOR EFFECTS ON THIS SERIAL ARE NOT AUTHENTIC" attached to VCI's Captain Video, when, in fact, they are NOT authentic (nor are they particularly well done). He also lists a warning for the color effects in BEATRICE FAIRFAX, even though those were done as according to notes that came with the original serial. I could go on and on here, but I have no need to argue with a perpetually angry person.

I doubt there's anybody less angry than me; you'll note that I constantly post over on my message board that anybody who takes this crap seriously
should be ashamed of themselves. We're talkin' about MOVIE SERIALS, f'rcripessake. Ozu and Welles and Chaplin shouldn't be taken as seriously
as some people are taking Breezy Eason.
I have no idea who Serial Murmerer is. I've seen his lists on the google board, and he doesn't strike me as being nearly as hysterical as Dr. Grood, but there ya have it.
