An under-rated Hammer horror that seems better now than when I first saw it on the BBC back in the summer of 1987 (the Beeb's thirtieth aniversary Hammer
season) in a double bill with Dracula - Prince of Darkness (1965). The Evil of Frankenstein (1964) rates a 3 out of 4 stars from me; not my favourite
Frankenstein (that would be The Curse of Frankenstein [1957]) which gets 3.5.

Here's a picture of Kiwi Kingston without makeup -- I presume from his wrestling days.

Seems Freddie Francis also put Kiwi in his Hammer production of HYSTERIA one year later. It probably went down like this........
"Freddie put Kiwi in another movie". "Or Kiwi break Freddie's back" ! |

I'm assuming the dilapidated castle set was the same used in THE GORGON made the same year. So it's probably the same dirt, moss, and dust in both
films. Boy o boy, what a silly thing to think about.

I'm always disappointed, when I go into a tavern, to not see Michael Ripper behind the bar. (And the current crop of barmaids just don't have the
charisma of those in a Hammer production. Where's Barbara Ewing when you need her?)

I was watching THE REPTILE the other night and I noticed that Ray Barret's character passes by the cottage that Peter Cushing uses as his lair in EVIL. In
EVIL it's shown when the body snatcher (the greasy chap in the begining) is walking a trail and we see the cottage in the distance. In REPILE Ray Barret is
walking the same trail after he's been attacked by Jacqueline Pearce (possibly the cutest snake I've ever seen.) I was also wondering (and maybe
somebody more well informed than myself could answer this) if this is the same cabin/cottage that Francis Matthews and Suzan Farmer pass by in DRACULA PRINCE
OF DARKNESS.
Speaking of EVIL I've read that the hypnotist subplot was lifted from an unfilmed episode for Hammer's "TALES OF FRANKENSTEIN" T.V. show. Is this a confirmed fact or just a theory? I always figured that the Zoltan character was partially inspired by SON OF FRANKENSTEIN's Ygor. Of course Zoltan is not a broken-necked body snatching blacksmith/sheep herder BUT he pretty much serves the same purpose. He is the only one that can control the Creature and (much like Ygor) uses the poor sap for his own selfish gain (not unlike Ygor using the Monster as an instrument to enforce revenge). It's just an idea but I see an obvious connection between the two. Has anybody else noticed this? |

Do ya think Kiwi has a bit of fake padding underneath that sweater ? He looks a bit like Herman Munster from the wrestling episode.
