Is that really true? I remember Target stocking the Legacy sets, Walmart had the 75th anniversary editions of FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA and the various franchise sets (MA & PA KETTLE, ABBOTT & COSTELLO, FRANCIS THE TALKING MULE).

I just posted in another thread about a TV episode (1956-ish) about the Lincoln assassination, with many from the cast of NIGHT OF THE HUNTER in it. Things like that which I haven't seen, and oddball movies I haven't seen, are at the top of my "Wish It Was on Home Video" list. MAD GHOUL and JUNGLE WOMAN and things like that ... I have to admit ... at this point in my life, they alternate from appearing at the bottom of my list to not being on the list at all.

That's the sort of stuff I've been hearing from more than one source. I seem to recall reading on the HTF or some other forum that Walmart's "we don't want to stock classics" decree came late last year. I doubt the chains are flat-out banning ALL classics--that would be pretty extreme--but I think they've made it clear to the studios that they're cutting back severely on the classics they'll choose to stock, and that they will devote more display and shelf space to recent and new titles.

Tom- I'm guessing you mean the live version of Jim Bishop's THE DAY LINCOLN WAS SHOT? Raymond Massey went back in the whiskers for that one. Jack Lemmon was J.W. Booth. And Lillian Gish was Mary Todd - but who else from HUNTER was in it? Last I checked, the "Paley Center for Media" (feh - The Museum of Televison & Radio!) had a copy you could view. An coincidentally, if you'd be interested in a Modern Audio Drama of the same basic story, recorded live at MT&R (!), lemme know. Best, "Abe" W.

You know, just to play devil's advocate for a minute, Universal might say that they've been pretty good to fans this year, what with the two SciFi Collections, MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000: THE MOVIE, the new Legacy Collection edition of THE MUMMY (packed with extras!), and now Season Two of ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY. Hi Tom, I respect your feelings about MAD GHOUL and JUNGLE WOMAN not being on your wish list or at bottom of same, but the question is if they were available would they be on the top of your WANT list. If they would, then you are fan of those movies. And it's not a matter of sounding like a "Grinch". I also have a "Fox and Grapes" kind of attitude about certain things that I deem as not within the realm of current possibility due to different circumstances, but that dosen't change the fact that I will be there with my wallet open if those circumstances change. I suspect that you were probably one of the first to purchase last year's box set from Universal even though HORROR ISLAND, BLACK CAT, and NIGHT MONSTER probably occupied the same space on your wish list with MAD GHOUL and JUNGLE WOMAN. I don't really expect it to solve anything; I don't think the situation CAN be solved, really... it just feels good to get it off my chest, I guess. But I'm leaning toward heeding your advice. Maybe I can still tell them I'd dissastisfied, but not in a nasty way. I don't think that going to the manager (himself usually a young, "acne-scarred" person, to quote Killer Meteor) solves a darn thing either, however. There was the story a couple years ago about how it was the Walmart executive that badgered Hallmark into putting out the first Laurel & Hardy collection. They do like older titles to appeal to their consumer base. Although when it comes to horror, they sell better in the Fall than around Easter. also would be nice if Chiller didn't run these films at 4 a.m.

I don't understand the logic of running blocks and blocks of unending Alfred Hitchcock (which by the way belongs on the Sleuth Channel), Tales from the Darkside, Friday the 13th, Werewolf, Freddy's Nightmare's, Monster, Tales From The Crypt, or Night Gallery. One of each, per day, would be quite sufficient, thank you. I would prefer to see more 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s Horror and Sci Fi movies. Also, the Video section of the Walmarts in my area have degenerated badly. They now stock only new releases, and a poor selection at that, African American, and Hispanic "classics", combo discs which contain two, three, or four movies from the 80s and up, some cartoons, and a few TV shows. When the $1 dollar spinner rack is more interesting then the actual video section you know they're in trouble.
