I met a friend who is a huge Lou Reed fan, and at the time he worked at a record store and when Metal Machine Music was offered he took in 25 copies. Came the day and he put it on the truntable, and discovered it was just over an hour of electronic noise, something Reed did to fulfill a contract with a label he hated. I will never forget the stunned looks of the customers as they actually expected music!!!! He picked the LP up, got the 25 copies and reboxed them to be returned. They must have lost a lot of money on that one, yet it never adversely affected Lou Reed at all. Anyone remember this fiasco, or does someone out there think this was good. I actualy have heard people praising this!!! A new stray. I hope Black Cats are good luck.

(05/14/08 6:52 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Yeah, there are people on this music website I frequent (rateyourmusic.com) who insist that it's a great album, and insist that they aren't being ironic or sarcastic when they say it. But puh-leeeeze... I'd heard it was bad before I shelled out the cash for a used copy, but I at least thought there would be some kind of music on it. If Lou wanted to give his record company the finger, he should've found a way of doing it that didn't screw his fans as well. I sold it at a garage sale for a quarter and still felt like I was ripping someone off. Legend, oh legend, the third wheel legend...always in the way. My MySpace page BumsCorner.com

Does anyone remember This Heat's "Health and Efficiency"? Half an hour of vacuum-cleaner-type noise. Does anyone even remember This Heat at all? I saw them live in 1980!

But it can be interesting to listen to, though I have yet to make it through the whole thing in a single sitting. I think I read where Lou Reed said that nobody should listen to the whole thing in one sitting... but that he was trying to do something at least, it wasn't just a contractual obligation thing.

(There's no law saying it has to be played loud.) As I've said here before, I take pride in having once listened to all four sides through stereo headphones. That's how you find out that the fourth side ends in a locked repeat groove, so that the album will continue to play indefinitely. When I sold off most of my vinyl collection, I kept my copy of METAL MACHINE MUSIC. I like it much better than, say, Neil Young's ARC WELD. Read Video WatchBlog at www.videowatchdog.com!

Lou Reed owed his label another album but they were fighting. So he came out with a double 'live' album that has an incredibly great cover. I remmeber rushing home the day it came out, heading for my dorm or wherever i was and putting it on eagerly. Let no one fool you with artistic yadda yadda: It is four sides of nothing but guitar feedback, not even Hendrix feedback but a drone, electric fuzz, nothing there at all. The only album I ever returned, and the sales clerk at Sam goodys or wherever it was didn't even argue. A lot of people were returning it! Incredibly, I now have it on CD -- on a French import. I think I'll put it on now just to see. Lou Reed says it's "Combinations and permutations built upon Constant Increase and Melodic Distractions.' OK, loading...it's playing. Eieeee! as Bill Warren would say. It sorta sounds like The Birds are attacking. Help!!!!

I'm not that big a fan of scraping metal sounds mixed with clanging, but at least it's a change from hearing The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" for the millionth time on some local classic rock station. And I made it through side three with headphones, but I think I had it up too loud and wound up with a major headache. When this LP hit the racks my pal Walter picked it up and we took it back to his house to give it a spin. We felt betrayed! Crestfallen. I still love (and often listen to) Lou's great stuff (Velvets and solo) but his declining output over the years has been nothing short of tragic to me. Walter still buys, faithfully, everything he releases. My most recent Lou Reed purchase was "New York"; a great album. He needs to subject himself to some more of whatever he was ingesting during that period! Anybody hear "The Raven"? Yeeesh!

That whole period with Robert Quine on second guitar was outstanding. But I've always seen him as equal parts artist, provocateur, salesman and fake; every new album is a spin of the roulette wheel. His most recent work has a pretentious edge to it that doesn't inspire me to play it very much. The best of the later stuff is probably ECSTASY, with its superb title track (one of the best guitar riffs he's ever come up with, which is saying something) and that epic, stupid, ridiculously long song about feeling "like a possum." For the record, I would classify METAL MACHINE MUSIC under "provocateur" rather than "artist," but I do think of it as an art object. Like an abstract painting that commands respect if not understanding, it is what it is. The overview of its gesture is more important than its actual substance. He has catchier songs elsewhere, but his best album might very well be BERLIN, which comes close to John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND effort as an intensely painful and personal work. david 'Satellite...satellite of love...'

(05/15/08 9:56 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Not only do I remember Metal Machine Music, I actually bought it.� I had seen Lou Reed in May, 1975, and he did a couple of songs in the concert that I wasn't familiar with.� I was in the college for the summer when it was released and as soon as I saw it I snapped up a copy.� I ran back to my dorm room and put it on and---eeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzkkkkk---you know.� The songs I had been unfamiliar with came out after the beginning of the year on 1976's Coney Island Baby.� But, I'm confused---Coney Island Baby came out after Metal Machine Music and was on the RCA label.� So who was Reed thumbing his nose at when he handed in Metal Machine Music?� And, did some record executive actually think that this was some sort of avant garde music?� Talk about The Emperor's New Clothes.
