Target Earth |

I watched this for the first time this weekend. The wife and I had a great time giggling at this silly Herman Cohen effort. Richard Denning is (was) always a
great presence these chessy flicks. It reminded me a little of "The Day the World Ended" in that a cross section of cliche' characters are thrown
together to survive in an apocalyptic scenario, a kind of low rent version of "Five". The robots are silly beyond words, and the deserted city is
represented by still frames rather that actual moving footage. The cast is a lot of fun, Whit Bissel brings refreshing professionalism to his scenes. Any fans
out there?

I agree with all your comments, Doc.
Although I can't find it, I SWEAR there's already a thread on this flick SOMEWHERE around here. That's how I found out about it and bought the disc! Cool commentary track on the DVD release by the way. I like the claustrophobic feel (ala Day The World Ended, like you mentioned) and Richard Denning is a real favorite of mine. |

Yeah, I looked over all 29 pages for the topic, no go! I thought that the backstory on Kathleen Crowley was pretty bleak and a little suprising for back then.
The Image disc transfer was clean. There is also a nice Herman Cohen tribute. I had heard of it (probably here) but waited to pull the trigger on the purchase.
I'm at the point in my movie watching where I need to find new material! I might break down and get the "Tobor the Great" release!

The basic design looks a lot like the drawing of the new Gort.

I haven't got the DVD, only the old VHS, but it's still an enjoyable movie. THE EARTH DIES SCREAMING, which came along just a few years later, is
reminiscent in many ways of TARGET EARTH.

Too much talk, not enough killer robots sums up my take on the film.

I saw Target Earth a couple of time as a kid, haven't seen it since, thoroughly enjoyed it at the time. The characters did seem more out
of a noir or crime picture than a sci-fi. Richard Denning was stronger than usual in the film, coming off almost as a tough guy a la Sterling Hayden
than a bland sci-fi hero. He did well by it, makes me wish he had more opportunities in mainstream pictures.
(The production values probably did suck, but as a kid it worked for me. There was a minimalism to the movie,--a euphemism for ultra-cheap?, whatever--that gave the picture a certain starkness, an eeriness's.) |

I remember this one fondly. It was one of those movies ch 19 out of Peoria would play on a boring Sunday afternoon. Yeah, it doesn't hold up on an adult
viewing, but man, the original "Deadly City" short story would make a great horror film if remade today... (Much in the same way "Who Goes
There?" was remade by Carpenter as "The Thing.")

I saw it in the 1960s on either Ghoulardi or Big Chuck and Hoolihan, and I recently purchased a DVD. Not a bad flick, the could have done better with the robot. |

Would you say it misses the target?
(sorry, that From Hell It Came thread is getting to me)

The plot does seem a bit mechanical.

You could say it hit an off note... (sound being their weapon... LOL... I crack myself up!)

The only redeeming feature in the film's latter half is the appearance of the great Whit Bissel.
