Lee's DRACULA cape auction...what happened? |
Lead | |
|
So wasn't the 'reported found' HORROR OF DRACULA cape- used by Christopher Lee- (that was found late last Summer) supposed to be auctioned here in
April?
Haven't heard a thing. Anyone know what happened? |

It got pushed back to this coming October. Supposidly the cape David Peel wore in Brides of Dracula was also found. If I were to bid 50,000+ dollars, I would
want a 100% positive authentication. This cape at Heritage looks nothing like the cape worn by Mr. Lee at all.

Has Lee authenticated it? Is his memory reliable?

I read that Mr. Lee said it looks like and could be the one. It looks like it and is long enough. I would want it 100% authenticated before I bid 50,000.00+ on
it. It has been 50 years since he wore that cape. I also read somewhere a while back that the cape from Horror of Dracula is the same cape in Dracula, Prince
of Darkness with the red lining added. Could be wrong and I bet it is wrong. Supposidly The Dracula Experience in Whitby, England has that cape on display and
weighs a wopping 52 Kilos (mind you that translates to about 124 lbs). Can you picture Mr. Lee wearing a cape that weighs 124lbs???? I don't think so. I
know the capes (all of them, including mine) are made of a wool outer (don't know what kind of wool) with a scarlet lining. There were 2 capes made for
Dracula Has Risen From the Grave and 2 for Dracula A.D. 1972. One for the carraige fight scene with Peter Cushing and the other fopr the rest of the film. The
capes worn in Dracula Has Risen From the Grave differ between the scene where he is ressurected from the ice and pointing at the priest and the rest of the
film. The cape for the ressurection scene was made a bit lighter weight so it would blow in the wind. I have done lots and lots of research and reading. There
is or was one on display at Planet Hollywood, London (didn't see it persoanlly). Some of his screen worn capes are out there and a few already owned by
collectors.....The one being auction off from Heritage (Horror of Dracula) definatley has a different neckcord than the one in the film. I heard that it might
have been damaged during the period of rental before Angel's discovered just what it was. But tampering and alternating it should take away from it's
overall value I would think. Bela Lugosi's cape from Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein was on ebay 2 years ago and ended at 179,000 plus but it also
ended with reserve not met.

The cape on display in London's Planet Hollywood was nothing Christopher Lee ever wore. I saw it and snorted. It was a high-collar opera cape ala Lugosi.
I'm sure the weight described by the Whitby Experience is off. Maybe it's 5.2 kilos, which would be about 12 pounds.

In a letter to his fan club while making TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, Lee referred to his "immensely heavy cape."

You sure it wasn't a harumph? My own opinion is without a tag or inventory/rental records, you wouldn't have a chance of proving it. Chances are a costume house would have a number of these in stock over the years, for the most part all similar. On a related note the LA Times had an article last Sat on the costumer for Harrison Ford in the new Indiana Jones flick. Last paragraph of the article stated there were the following made for Ford in case of loss or damage: 30 Fedoras, 30 leather jackets, 60 shirts, 72 pants - Dollars to donuts within the next few years "the hat" or "the jacket" will be coming up for auction for major dinero. Back-up copies have been made since the beginning of film, but with the big bucks involved nowadays + insurance requirements, they make lots of back-ups. I'm a collector myself, but why anyone would touch anything from movies of the last couple decades is beyond me. Even the prop makers will admit (privatley) they make copies for themselves to sock away for retirement. Why not make a couple for yourself? The molds/paint etc are up and running. Tis easy. |

The cape I own erik, has nothing to do with Halloween. Why do you own any of your memorabilia?
