Sure, some folks on the street might have an inkling that Lee played Dracula somewhere along the line, and they might even know that Reed was a werewolf (although I'd bet most people wouldn't know Lee, Reed, or Hammer). So, then, what is the most famous and well-known film in Hammer's stable? For me, it's obvious: One Million Years, BC. And the reason is again obvious: Raquel Welch (not so much Harryhausen, anymore). The famous shot of Raquel staring off into the golden horizon was featured in Shawshank Redemption, and many times I've seen that particular pin-up/photo on television and in books. We might love Dracula, we might get into the Wolfman, but Hammer's greatest contribution to popular culture is a blonde startlet dressed in a deerskin bikini. Agree? Or disagree?

I'm pretty sure that this title was Hammer's highest grossing film (probably one of the most expensive to make as well, though, so I'm not sure if it was necessarily their most profitable). For a modern audience, though, I'm sure many more are familiar with the classic poster than have actually seen the film.

(05/09/08 10:34 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	In my stumbling perambulations across this mighty World Wide Web I often have cause to pause at sites that offer information dealing with what the industry terms "box office," namely the monies accrued at ticket stands in motion picture theaters. I've had cause to notice more than once that the filmic venture mentioned in the opening post, "One Million Years, B.C.," has generally, if not universally cited as the pre-emininet "box office" grosser for the Hammer film studio. If I recall correctly, and please forgive the failing brain cells of one advancing in age, but the figure I have most frequently come across, at least relating to "box office," not that of the voluptuous star Raquel Welch, although she is ubiquitous, is a worldwide gross of $8 million on an investment of 425,000 lbs. This information can be verified in the contents of the very excellent Mr. Denis Meikle's book "A History of Horrors: The Rise and Fall of the House of Hammer." (I made that me own seff by chosing a script-type font (fantasy) then selecting the character and doing a "~~strike-through~~." ) There was a gag-- I think Jon Lovitz was a bad guy-- and he said, "I'm holding her hostage for one hundred pounds!" "One hundred pounds?" "Yes, 100 pounds of money!" Maybe Steve Martin. Anyway. I think the figures are generally right, and I'd bet BC probably is the best known Hammer movie. Whether it made any dough for Hammer, that's debatable. Harryhausen grumbled, 10 or 15 or 20 years after the fact, that his share amounted to about 12 dollars in royalties. It cost under a million bucks and grossed eight times its cost theatrically. Those numbers are pretty nice, and there's no telling what it's done with TV, cable and video, which is all gravy. I'd guess DHRFG probably cost a half million, give or take, but probably made 5 or 6 theatrically. I don't have any source figures for that. Just blowing wind.
