I was always under the impression that FM # 20 (cover of Lon Chaney in "London After Midnight") had the worst record for the split spine. Could have been because the batch of coated stock it's printed on was poor grade. Or maybe the paper was loaded in the press turned the wrong way making the spine run with the grain and resulting in weakness. (Or were those mags printed on a web press instead of sheet-fed?) Who knows. At the time, the magazines were cheap, disposable entertainment. Nobody expected them to be coveted objects so many years later.
I have two FM no. 20, one in OK condition, and a really nice copy. The former has chipping along the spine, the latter is in nice condition. My no. 16 also has that chipping. I think the covers on no. 11 FALL OFF, at least mine does.
