The Avengers: July 2011

The nearness of the release dates of these two movies, and the title of the first, lead me to make these predictions: The Captain America movie will be set during World War II, and will end with a cliffhanger, with the villain getting away and Captain America going into suspended animation. In the Avengers movie, he will be revived in the present day, and will set about completing his mission.

This is obvious enough that I am sure many others have also speculated thus, but I thought I would throw it out anyway.

Re-reading this gave me an unpleasant flashback to 1988, when comics fans were insisting that the new Batman movie most definitely was going to be a comedy--the involvement of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton guaranteed this, and the producers and writers who insisted otherwise were simply lying. The fanboys did not cover themselves with glory then, and I would prefer to not seem like them. Allow me to clarify, then.

It seems reasonable to suppose that a film written and directed by Edgar Wright will be a comedy, especially when the premise easily leads itself to such an approach (see: HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS). However, before taking this for granted, one has to consider two points: 1) Wright's commentaries on the "Trailers from Hell" website show him to be a serious horror movie buff. Perhaps he is also a comics fan, in which case he may have chosen this project not because he has a lot of jokes ready about a tiny guy who talks to insects, but because he has always wanted to make a super-hero movie. 2) This is a work-for-hire situation. Wright is working with someone else's creations, not his own, and he is probably not being told "Do whatever you want to them." He is going to have to make the movie that Avi Arad wants him to make--and, if we assume that Ant-Man will be a part of the Avengers movie, then Arad probably does not want the character to be totally goofy.

Anyway, we shall see.
