1. Day the Earth Caught Fire: Because it's in B&W, it doesn't get shown much today, but what a picture! Low budget, yet the acting is so great, you'll be convinced the world is coming to an end???
2. Colossus: the Forbin Project: Acting a little wooden here, but a great script and direction. Again, you'll be thinking: could this happen?
2. Quatermass & the Pit: Hammer's most intelligent film, and downright creepy. The ending suffers from lack of adequate effects, but overall a fireproof script and great cast.
Wow, Hausenfan, we seem to have the same taste in sci-fi! Those three are (along with THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN) my favorite sci-fi films of all time. Though I must disagree with your assessment of COLOSSUS' wooden acting.
Setting aside the above-mentioned sf films, my list would include:THE TRAP (1966) Excellent film with the irreplaceable Oliver Reed as a French-Canadian trapper who takes in deaf-mute Rita Tushingham. This needs a DVD release!
HOMBRE (1967) Taut Elmore Leonard western with Paul Newman heading a great cast.
THE YAKUZA (1974) Two of the greatest urban tough guy actors in history - Robert Mitchum and Takakura Ken - team up in this moody, fascinating tale of honor and sacrifice.
Hard to just list three!
