Blood on Satan's Claw |

A while back, I heard rumors that this movie was to be put on DVD. Anyone hear anything about a release? The MGM VHS is obviously edited. I'd love to see this uncut.

If you're region free, the UK have a release of this.
I believe you missed the R1 release. |

Was there a Region 1 DVD? I recall reading that Anchor Bay did the Region 2 release, and kept hoping we'd see one on these shores from them.

I could be wrong, but when i decided to buy this film on DVD, i found reviews of a R1 release that was OOP. So i ended up buying the R2. It could have been an R2 that went OOP then re-issued with a different cover~my mind is getting old.

I'm fairly certain there has never been an official R1 DVD release of this title.
Reviews might have been of the R2 release or of a gray-market burn. |

You're right grgstv. i just looked it up and the review i was thinking is from DVD-Drive-in and it is/was an R2 Pal release.
I should also add that the current R2 is too dark in my opinion, i had to look at the stills to see what Satan really looked like. (maybe that was intentional) |

You're right, it has not been released on R1. You think the Anchor Bay R2 disc looked too dark? I didn't think it was too dark at all--it looks far better than any of the VHS versions I've seen, plus it's uncut. I say, grab that R2 while it's still in print!

LOL~yes nudity is clear.
But...when Satan joins the party at the end i couldn't quite make him out. As i said...it might be intentional. |

No, everything is clear on the R2 disc--the well-endowed, topless dancing girl; the guy in the hairy Satan outfit at the end; etc. I did not notice any problems with the pic quality.

As mentioned, no R1 for this yet, but we may see it eventually from MGM / Sony ( MGM lent the materials to ABUK for their release ). The film has been issued twice on R2, the second release came in the Tigon Box and for that they changed up the special features, nixing the Linda Hayden doc AN ANGEL FOR SATAN and replacing it with another featurette. So the two R2's carry the same transfer but differ in their extras.
I'd also agree the image is the best I have seen and is not overly dark on my system. Biggest bummer is that it's not anamorphic. |

This is one of my favourite films I was really pleased to be able to add it to my DVD collection a few years ago

Don't "kill the messenger" if I'm wrong but I'm hearing through the grapevine that the BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW that'll be on TCM
tonight is supposed to be uncut and letterboxed.

I think I already told this anecdote in another thread, but:
Shortly before MGM was sold, the company that produced the extras for the R2 DVD contacted MGM to see if they were interested in licensing them for an R1 DVD. So the person in charge of the Midnite Movies wrote and asked me if I had heard of this film, and was this worth pursuing? I answered that although I wasn't overly fond of it, it had an ardent fan base that would love to see it on R1 DVD, so if you can get the budget for it, great, go for it. So some informal talks started, and the possibility of them also creating new extras for some of MGM's Hammer titles came up-- And then MGM was sold and everything came screeching to a halt. MGM never licensed the extras, the person in charge of the Midnite Movies was laid off, and that, alas, was the end of that. |

TCM did show a lovely transfer of this film in what I believe is an uncut version.
Judging from various sources it is the UK release (the main title is in white letters over the close-up of the crow VS the red titles on the US cut version) so
it may be the same transfer that was issued as a region 2 disk. The film holds up rather well. There is a great sense of the period and the setting (rural
England) which is remarkable since apparently they had all of tn cents in the budget. The lack of money for cool effects is overcome by good film making. The
flick is quite creepy and the score by Marc Wilkinson is especially fine as is Dick Bush's photography. All in all director Piers Anthony's debut is
something he should be very proud of as should all involved.
The film suffers a bit (at least in my opinion) from being part of that mini-trend of "gee, the witch hunters were right after all" films since I have a problem with religious persecution in general. The films Witchcraft and Cry of the Banshee are two that come to mind. I also have a bit of trouble with "devil films" since they are so thoroughly saturated with a Christian religious world view. It is interesting that there appears to be traces of a subplot about the local vicar having scientific interests that seem to dilute his authority as a religious figure but it is mostly set dressing. However a film such as Witchfinder General doesn't fall into that category and it's so unpleasant that having seen it a few times I'm done with that one. Oddly enough when that film played on TV in North Carolina in the early 1970s they got their 16mm prints from the UK version and ended up showing it with all the nudity until some spoil sport told them about it.

Saw a new 35mm print of this, and the art direction evokes 18th century rural England on a low budget beautifully, with the velvet green woods, the rustic
stone walls covered with moss, the creaky buildings, old carriages and costumes; even the characters speak a very convincing period dialect. Excellent, eerie
music, too. The story is a bit aimless, though (but even that is refreshingly "independent" compared to today's streamlined blockbusters), and
the underlying theme of teenage sexuality as a manifestation of the demonic is very 1970s. The ending is a let down, but the sexuality, especially of the
seductive priestess/witch "Angel" is fantastic, and the rape of a teenage girl by an energetic farm boy as the other kids chant and whip his naked
body with branches is a great expression of merciless, pagan forest magic. Not nearly as good as "Witchfinder General", but still a fascinating relic
of early '70s low-end cinema.

On the lower right is Wendy Padbury who played Zoe in Doctor WhoWas just watching the DOCTOR WHO DVD of "The Mind Robbers" which has an episode where "Padders" is wearing a jumpsuit that, in one sequence with her climbing atop a control console, is almost too form-fitting. As her co-star, Frazer Hines, observed, "We could have been reciting Shakespeare and no one would have noticed." Although this shot doesn't give us the particular rear-view angle he was commenting on, you can see a still of the costume/episode at http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/lot/9501/zoe1.jpg
