(02/24/08 1:56 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	Tags : None OK - I'm about halfway through Irwin Allen's 1960 remake of THE LOST WORLD and my first impression is THIS STINKS LIKE LAST WEEK'S DEAD IGUANA. Anybody want to try to convince me otherwise..? EDIT: That dinocroc sounds just like those STAR WARS TIE fighters. Or more accurately: Those STAR WARS TIE fighters sound just like that dinocroc. At best, THE LOST WORLD Irwin Allen style is a kamp klassic of sorts, because you just can't take this bunch of celebrities very seriously, despite the distinguished presence of Claude Rains and Michael Rennie. At least the DVD includes the expanded version of the genuinely classic silent version as well.

(02/29/08 1:29 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite	I'd like to think if I had seen this one as a kid I would have a lot more affection for it, but even then I found slurpasaurus effects a huge letdown. I recall being excited because JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959) was airing during a visit to my grandparents (they had a color TV with a round screen; I don't think I ever saw another one like it). I had already been spoiled rotten for Harryhausen's dinos in ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. and VALLEY OF GWANGI and felt really gypped by those gussied-up lizards. Somewhere in our collection of family home Super 8 movies there are shots I took of that broadcast of JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Our home movies of family reunions, visits to the beach, and kids jumping off ladders (we thought that was really cool to film, for some reason) are often interrupted by my filming from the TV brief excepts from horror, sci-fi, and fantasy films. If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.

The Dimetrodons actually look pretty good,IMO. And the chameleon was scary (and just why did they have that POV shot from INSIDE it's mouth?)

I must admit to some warm fuzzies toward those rowdy JOURNEY Dimetrodons. Being backed by Bernard Herrmann's growling score (including a serpent!) helps. Music for Dimetrodons If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.

The wide shot of the dimetrodons on the beach as our heroes drag the raft into the water is particularly well done. The inside-the-mouth shot was unusual and highly memorable.
