Dec 28 07 12:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Coming to DVD some time in 2008, I'm told: JIGGS AND MAGGIE OUT WEST (Monogram, 1950) -- which I don't recall ever seeing on any list of fantasy films. But I just read a couple synopses and apparently Maggie (Renie Riano) is visited and advised by the ghost of her grandfather throughout. Start updating all those old books on Hollywood ghost movies!

Dec 28 07 12:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Actually, I'm now reading-up on the JIGGS AND MAGGIE series and several of them may be surreal/borderline fantasy: There's an entry in which the JIGGS AND MAGGIE cartoonist (played by himself) is sued by Maggie because she's being made ribbed because of her resemblance to the cartoon character; another where the cartoonist (again) figures into a deus ex machina wrap-up, resolving all the issues in that movie by telling the characters to get back into his inkwell, weird stuff like that. These may be a bit more interesting than they sound.

One of the reasons I dearly love those '50 pack' movie sets is I'm always running across films and characters I'm either only vaguely aware of or that are completely new to me. A recent example: Edward Arnold as the blind detective Mac McClain (many, many years before Longstreet) and his multi-talented guide dog Friday in EYES IN THE NIGHT (1942). If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.

And it's directed by William Beaudine, so it's just gotta be good. for that matter, so were JIGGS AND MAGGIE IN COURT and JIGGS AND MAGGIE IN JACKPOT JITTERS. Sounds like somebody needs to write the exhaustive Jiggs and Maggie companion book - quick! If you're an Andy Milligan fan there's no hope for you.

Dec 28 07 7:25 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tom, I thought everybody knew that Jiggs and Maggie were the 1940's equivalent of The X-Files. Who didn't know? Just kidding, I've never seen one. But, hearing the deus ex machina wrapup to one of the films doesn't really leave me expecting too much from the films as a whole. Sounds like that horrible ending for Lugosi's The Ape Man where the writer steps in and destroys any "integrity" that the film had been able to establish. I guess if the classic film market runs dry we'll turn to the Arthur Treacher Jeeves films.

What's embarrassing is that I probably saw JIGGS AND MAGGIE OUT WEST when it was new, because I saw most of this kind of thing. I do recall seeing George McManus in a movie around then, but he did appear in most of the movies in this short-lived series, so I may be remembering him from one of the others. He was something of a celebrity for his comic strip work. Incidentally, Jiggs (last name) was played by Joe Yule--Mickey Rooney's father, who died soon after this film was completed. "Bringing Up Father"/"Jiggs and Maggie" was a great comic strip in McManus' very distinctive drawing style. McManus died in 1954, but the comic strip continued on under other hands until as recently as 7 years ago--it had an 87-year run. McManus had other strips before that, and a couple of them provided the stories for a slew of silent films; there were also silent Jiggs & Maggie movies, including (I think) some cartoons.. "Bringing Up Father" was about a working-class Irishman, Jiggs, who unexpectedly became a millionaire. This led his wife, Maggie, to take on highfalutin society airs. Jokes centered on Jiggs' attempts to put up with this, often while suffering severe cases of gout, and while desperately hungry for corned beef and cabbage. Jiggs hung out at Dinty Moore's saloon; a slight trace of the comic strip lingers on--you can still buy cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew. Last Edited By: Bill Warren Dec 28 07 8:51 PM. Edited 5 times.

This gives the Rays the unique distinction of having starred in both a legitimate and a rip-off version of the same George McManus story, in MUGGSY IN SOCIETY (1917) and JIGGS IN SOCIETY (1920).

Dec 29 07 9:42 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I used to see some of those Joe Yule/Jiggs and Maggie movies on an obscure satellite station that ran pd films in the middle of the night. They would alternate them with things like the Bud Duncan/Snuffy Smith films and Arthur Wontner/Sherlock Holmes flicks and Kane Richmond/Shadows. Everything that channel showed seemed exceptionally creaky at the time, yet I of course enjoyed them and would welcome seeing those offbeat titles again today. I enjoyed watching Joe Yule on TCM last month in a whole passel of those "Maisie" movies.

Dec 30 07 11:58 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	There was an oddball satellite station by the name of SPN which used to run public-domain films all-night long back in the mid-80s, and they aired "Jiggs and Maggie Out West" (1950). That's where I managed to view and tape it, back in 1984 or so. It was the only entry in the series I recall circulating, though. Been a long, long time since looking at it, but I do seem to recall the ghost angle. And, the rather surreal aspect of McManus himself interacting with his own characters. It wasn't particularly good, though. Although it remains the only "Jiggs and Maggie" film I've seen to date, and maybe not the best one to form an opinion with, I'll say I'm marginally more impressed with Monogram's other comic-strip series, "Joe Palooka."

I've seen BRINGING UP FATHER and J & M OUT WEST on gray-market DVDs, but I'd like to know if I might have a chance to see the other three films in the series in this lifetime. - Clark hollowaypages.com

May 11 13 6:17 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I didn't want to start a new thread for this: Speaking of fantasy films that never appear on any lists of fantasy films, I just watched BONZO GOES TO COLLEGE (1952) in which Bonzo has a "Mr. Memory" (THE 39 STEPS) -type carnival act, fielding the audience's toughest questions and writing the answers on a blackboard; later he goes to college and writes out his answers to the college entrance exams, blocks out on a blackboard the football team's strategy, etc. Everybody's amused and a little impressed, no one ever has any kind of normal reaction.

May 11 13 7:32 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Jiggs and Maggie in the 1914 stage musical version of the strip: According to the Wiki: The creators of the play produced many more theatrical versions of the strip that toured the country, including Bringing Up Father in Florida,Bringing Up Father on Broadway, Bringing Up Father in Ireland, Bringing Up Father Abroad, and Bringing Up Father in Wall Street. I wonder if a running series of plays based on popular characters were common in those pre/early-flickers days.
