A new adaptation of Stephen King's terrifying novella 'The Mist' started its 10 episode run on SPIKE tonight. The characters have been almost completely changed and there's extended melodramatic backstories for all, with makes this play for long stretches like a Lifetime movie or a Very Special Episode of The Facts of Life. The main setting seems to have been switched to a suburban mall, which was a little disappointing for me since the original grocery store setting seemed so original.
The series seems to be setting up some combustible pockets of survivors so hopefully everybody will work out their personal issues before getting ripped into pieces by mutant whatits. The first episode concluded with the mist finally arriving and wreaking havoc on the town, and there's some very extreme gore and violence.
I'm thinking future episodes will be more interesting, now that most of the backstories are established.
EVER SO SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT: a couple of important characters from the novella (and Frank Darabont's excellent but controversial film adaptation) are introduced and immediately gobbled up by something in The Mist.
