I'm reminded of a past CHFB thread (that, typically back then, got needlessly heated) about film collectors. A few CHFBers were hailing them as heroes because some had saved movies from extinction; and I raised the issue of "Well, how many movies are extinct BECAUSE of film collectors?" -- guys who steal from studio vaults. I don't know if they do more harm or good.
"This negative of _______ has been safely stored here for 40 [or 60 or 80] years. I better steal it and take it home, because they might throw it away any minute now!" -- pfffffft!!

I once went to a party where a stranger walked up to me and said, "I hear you work at Films Inc. Can you swap my dupe of THE BODY SNATCHER for an original?"

If they couldn't get jobs in these places, they'd offer to pay someone who DID work there to steal for them. Prints were regularly stolen from TV stations too, back in the days when they showed movies on 16mm. A friend once boasted to me that he just paid someone to steal Channel 5's print of NOT OF THIS EARTH for him. Sure enough, the next time Channel 5 scheduled NOT OF THIS EARTH, I tuned in and the announcer made some kind of apology and they showed something else instead.
Movies are these pigs' whole lives. I once went to a party where a stranger walked up to me and said, "I hear you work at Films Inc. Can you swap my dupe of THE BODY SNATCHER for an original?" No, pal, I wouldn't. In fact, after this "wonderful" first impression you've just made on me, I wouldn't throw you a rope if you were drowning.
Negatives, trailers, stills -- anything that wasn't nailed down in these places, there were movie-fan employees with sticky fingers waiting for their opportunity. Believe me.
