Caught this docu-drama on the real life 70's serial killer on TCM the other night. Poverty row acting, over the top dialogue ("Atlantis shall rise again! I am the super zodiac!"), bad16mm camerawork & cardboard sets. Yet somehow it's very cruddiness worked for it. It's foulmouthed, completely misogynistic ("I like 'em plump and juicy and dumb!" "Listen, b****, I'll get the kid a few toys for Christmas, so don't bug me!"), has a killer who talks to rabbits and a comic relief character who carries a gun & threatens to shoot girls who laugh at his toupee.
All of which works I think, because the (fictional version of the real) story is totally sleazy and the director/screenwriter see the characters and setting - male chauvinists vs. the the Sexual Revolution - as despicable. Any thoughts.?
